S. Environmental Protection Agency Region VI Surveillance and Analysis Division Houston Branch Houston, Texas June 1976 ------- Background The operation of the National Air Surveillance Network (NASN) was decentralized in fiscal year 1974. Responsibility was passed from the National Environmental Research Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, to Region VI and operation began January 1974 at the Surveillance and Analysis Division's Houston Branch. In July 1975 the network was further decentralized when the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma accepted responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the NASN stations located in their respective states. The State of Texas accepted respon- sibility in January of 1976. Summary of Activities The routine preparation and mailing of reagents, filters, supplies, and equipment was continued through July 1975 for all states except Texas, which was supplied through December 1975. Since the July assumption of NASN duties by four of the states in Region VI, an analytical quality control program involving split samples for nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide has been in effect. When using the manual method for SO ,. the lower detection limit is approximately 2 25 ug S02 per cubic meter . For N0«» the detection limit is given as 0.02 ug N02 per milliliter, corresponding to an ambient concentration of about 5 ug NO per cubic meter.
