EPA Databases Alternate Treatment Technology Information Center (ATTIC) ATTIC is a comprehensive information network providing up-to-date information on alternative treatment technologies for hazardous waste. ATTIC is comprised of a collection of databases on hazardous waste treatment, an electronic bulletin board, a hotline, and a repository/ clearinghouse. (Region 3) Aquatic Toxicity Information retrieval (ACQUIRE) ACQUIRE is a widely accessed information system that contains information on the toxicity of any chemical (except oils) to fresh and saltwater organisms (not including bacteria and amphibians) Acquire now contains 109,338 individual aquatic toxicity test results for 5,159 chemicals, 2,429 organisms, and over 160 endpoints reviewed from 7,517 publications hotline, and a repository/clearinghouse. (Region 1, Duluth) Computer Aided Legislative Data System (CELDS) see EnviroText (Region 7) Consent Decree Tracking System An EPA National Enforcement Investigations Center-operated and maintained system consisting of a hard copy library of consent decrees to which EPA is a party, a computerized inventory of that library, and computerized summaries 12/9/93— Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries ------- of the contents of decrees by facility. (National Enforcement Investigations Center Library) ECLIPS see ROL (Region 6; AWBERC; Narragansett) EMMI The EMMI is a computerized catalog of information on environmentally significant chemical substances monitored by the EPA, methods for their analysis, and the regulatory and office-based lists on which they appear. EMMI combines rapid look-up capabilities with a user-friendly interface and easily accessible data. Information on more than 2400 unique analyses that are identified on 40 statutorily mandated and office-based lists, and approximately 900 analytical methods is contained in the system. Regulatory lists include all Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, RCRA, SDWA, and CERCLA lists. (Regions 2, 5, 9; HQ; Annapolis; AWBERC; Edison; Gulf Breeze; Narragansett) Enforcement Docket (DOCKET) A national system containing all pertinent information regarding administrative, civil, or enforcement action taken by EPA against violators of all Federal environmental statutes. (National Enforcement Investigations Center Library) Enforcement Document Retrieval System (EDRS) An automated database that contains the full text of enforcement documents (i.e., policy, guidance, consent decrees). Documents are fully indexed; the user searches the database for applicable documents and text by specifying words or phrases of interest. (Regions 1, 5, 9, 10; Law; NEIC) EnviroText EnviroText (or ETRS) is ah interagency, automated environmental knowledge base. It was developed by EPA with funding from the Departments of Energy, Army, Justice, Defense, Interior, and the Bureau of Mines. EnviroText is currently a pilot system and will continue as such until the Fall of 1994 when it will be opened to the public as a National not-for-profit Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries— 12/9/93 ------- environmental knowledge database. EnviroText is an expansion of and successor to the Computer-aided Environmental Legislative Data System (CELDS). Included in the system are U.S. and State regulations, Indian Tribal Codes and policies, the National Register of Historic Places, International Treaties, Executive Orders, ARARs guidance and Agencies policy and guidance including EPA, Interior, Executive Office of the President, and Justice, (contact Rhea Cohen (703) 603-8878. (Region 2, 7; AWBERC; Duluth; HQ; NEIC) ETRS see EnviroText Facilities and Company Tracking System (FACTS) FACTS is a major Agency Information System produced by the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (QSWER). It allows read-only access to the Duns Marketing Information file for Regulatory Impact Analyses. (Region 1) Facility Index System (FINDS) An EPA database, it provides descriptive information on facilities/ establishments which are of interest to EPA programs, with a cross reference to EPA programmatic information systems which have information on these facilities/establishments. (National Enforcement Investigations Center Library) Geophysics Advisor Expert System Assists and educates non geophysicists in the use of geophysics at hazardous wastes sites. (Region 2; Annapolis) Hazardous Waste Superfund Database (HWSFD) An EPA system, contains references to key materials on hazardous waste in the EPA library network. Bibliographic descriptions, keywords, abstracts, locations and other information are listed for books, EPA reports. Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) policy and guidance directives, periodicals and commercial databases containing information on hazardous waste. All libraries in the EPA Library Network have access to the Hazardous Waste Superfund Database. Hard copies of the documents are 12/9/93—Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries ------- available in the Regional libraries, the National Enforcement Investigations Center, Denver, CO, and the laboratory libraries in Cincinnati, OH; Edison, NJ; Research Triangle Park, NC; Ada, OK; and Las Vegas, NV. A list of the documents is available at all other laboratory libraries. Holdings Holdings is a comprehensive computerized listing of Environmental Criteria and Assessment Office (ECAO) documents and of the records used in the writing of these documents. The database is linked to other LAI/ECAO databases, including the Superfund Technical Support Center's HARTS and MASTERLIST system and the Risk Information Hotline's IRIS tracking systems and can provide comprehensive ECAO document listings. (TIU/ECAO-Cinn.) Information Systems Inventory (ISI) An EPA database listing some 500 EPA information systems and environmental models. The database includes a description of each environmental system/model and can be accessed several ways, including by system name, acronym, associated Congressional act or law, keywords and responsible personnel. (Available to all libraries in the EPA Library Network.) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) An E-mail based system containing EPA data on a chemical by chemical basis. Data include, when available, oral reference doses, carcinogenicity assessments, acute health hazard data, arid risk management summaries.. Available to all EPA libraries in the EPA Library Network. (Available to all libraries in the EPA Library Network.) Library of Congress Information System (LOCIS) Provides access to the online catalog at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. (HQ-Duluth) Master System Inventory System (MAIS) See NCEPI Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries— 12/9/93 ------- National Center for Environmental Publications and Information (NCEPI) NCEPI is an online database management system used by the National Center for Publications and Information (NCEPI). NCEPI accommodates order entry, inventory, and mailing lists/customer account functions and provides for the entry, editing, and tracking of each. NCEPI provides the Agency libraries, programs, public information centers and regional offices with access to over 32,000 Agency titles housed within NCEPI, the NationalTechnical Information service (NTIS) and other Agency programs. (Region 7; HQ; NEIC, PIC) Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Supports resource sharing among more than 2,700 member libraries. Participants use the OCLC Cataloging module to catalog books, serials, and various other library materials and the Interlibrary Loan module to facilitate interlibrary lending. (Available to all libraries in the EPA Library Network.) Online Library System (OLS) The holdings of the EPA library network are listed in the network's Online Library System (OLS), an electronic card catalog. It improves access to the wealth of information available from the 28 libraries at Headquarters, the Regional Offices and laboratories. The system may be searched using numerous access points in addition to title, author, and keyword. The OLS lists all EPA reports in the network holdings and those available from the U.S. National Technical Information Service (NTIS). Descriptive summaries are available for selected EPA reports and other titles. Information contained in the following databases is also included in OLS. • Hazardous Waste Superfund Collection Database (H)—This database contains items maintained in the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response's Hazardous Waste Superfund Collection. • Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) Chemical Collection Database (CH)—The Chemical Collection Database contains citations of microfiche copies of articles in the OPPT Chemical Collection System. • Access 93 (A)—Access 93 contains information from the publication ACCESS EPA, a directory of U.S. EPA and other public sector information sources, maintained by the Office of Information Resources Management. 12/9/93—Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries ------- • The Environmental Financing Information Network (EFIN) (F) provides information on financing alternatives for state and local environmental programs and projects primarily in the forms of abstracts of publications, case studies, and contacts. (OLS is Available to all libraries in the EPA Library Network.) Records of Decision System (RODS) A database that contains the records of decisions at hazardous waste sites. The system can be used to reference previous treatments chosen at sites to determine treatment at current sites. (Regions 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9; NEIC) Register of Lists (ROD Available to all network libraries. The Register of Lists is a PC tool that associates EPA chemicals and regulations with major EPA Activities, and encourages integration of information across EPA's programs. ROL contains information on chemical lists and chemicals. For chemical lists ROL contains statutory cites, program offices, chemical and identifiers, person to contact, CAS number, CAS preferred name (9CI). For chemicals ROL contains List(s) to which they belong, synonyms, RQs, TPQs, status on IRIS. The current software for the ROL is ECLIPS Version 1.50. (Regions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9; AWBERC; Edison; Gulf Breeze; HQ; Las Vegas; NEIC; OPPT) Roadmaps Roadmaps is a database of sources of chemicals listed in section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), also known as Title in of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA). The database allows users to perform assessments of the listed chemicals. (OPPT) Sampling and Analysis Database The Sampling and Analysis Database was developed by RREL-Cincinnati scientists on dbase III in 1988. It includes summaries of EPA approved methods to measure analyses and chemicals in the environment. Each summary includes brief description of the chemical such as primary chemical Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries— 12/9/93 ------- name; EPA method number; CAS number, application; instrumentation; and citation to an EPA document describing the method. (AWBERC) Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Produced by the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. Contains information from industrial facilities on the amounts of hazardous chemicals released to air, water, and land or transferred offside. Alerts the public and government to possible chemical hazards in communities. (Available to all libraries in the EPA Library Network.) Vendor Information System for Innovative Treatment Technologies (VISIT!) VISITT is a database of innovative treatment technologies for the cleanup of hazardous waste sites. Its primary purpose is to allow screening of lip-do-date information on innovative technologies for application to the cleanup of waste sites. (Region 9) Networks Access Colorado Library and Information Network (ACLIN). A cooperative effort of 135 libraries across Colorado providing access to virtually all academic libraries' online catalogs. ACLIN also provides access to CARL. (National Enforcement Investigations Center Library) Consortium of Libraries in Cooperation Network (ClicNet) An online bibliographic database which contains the holdings of the following Minnesota academic libraries: Augsburg College, Bethel College, Concordia College, Hamline University, James J. Hill Reference Library, Macalester College, College of St. Catherine, and the University of St. Thomas. (Duluth) 12/9/93—Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries ------- Colorado Association of Research Libraries (CARL) An online bibliographic database which contains the holdings of six major Colorado research libraries. (Region 8; Ada; Las Vegas; NEIC) Higher Education Library Information Network (HELIN). HELIN is a consortium of higher education libraries providing public access to their online catalogs. (Narragansett) Illinet Provides online access to catalog holdings of Illinois libraries including state, academic, corporate, and public libraries, (includes OCLC codes) (Region 5; Ada) MELVYL—University of California Academic Library System A consortium of academic libraries in California providing online access to their joint catalogs. (Las Vegas) Metronet A Minneapolis based bulletin board for librarians and anyone interested in international books, publishing, libraries, electronic databases and advertising requests or giveaways. (Duluth) Nevada Academic Libraries Information System (NALIS) NALIS contains the catalogs of the University of Nevada Las Vegas's online catalog; Northern Nevada Academic Libraries (WOLFFAK); University of Nevada Reno's online catalog as well as MELVYL (University of California Academic Library System); CARL (Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries System); and electronic journal indexes. (Las Vegas) Northern Nevada Academic Libraries (WOLFPAC) see NALIS (Las Vegas) Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries—12/9/93 8 ------- Oklahoma Library Network Provides online access to catalog holdings of Oklahoma libraries; including state, academic, corporate, and public libraries. (Ada) OrPAC OrPAC is a collection of databases and information files available on the Oregon State Library's OrPAC system. As of October 1993, conversion to BRS/SEASRCH software had begun. Current OrPAC Resources include ORCAT, the Oregon State Library's online catalog; Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) produced by the General Services Administration; DEQ Water Quality Database, an inventory of documents relating to the issue of dioxin contamination from pulp mills; EVENTS, a calendar of Oregon events; JOBS, a database of all currently available job opening in Oregon State Government. (Corvallis) Project for Automating State Library Systems (PALS) This is a database of holdings of the Minnesota State Universities, Technical Colleges, and some public libraries. It is accessed through a gateway in the Lumina System or one can dial direct with a login password. (Duluth) Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) Online System The Triangle Research Libraries Network, consisting of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, and Duke University, Durham, has implemented a comprehensive, next-generation library information system that provides access to the three university library online catalogs; other searchable databases; and gateways to other information services. (RTP-AREAL) University of Minnesota, Duluth's "Unicorn System" Contains most of the holdings of UMD's Library System including the Health Sciences Library and Natural Resources Research Institute. (Duluth) 12/9/93—Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries ------- Commercial Databases Bibliographic Retrieval Service (BRS) A commercial vendor of databases, provides access to more than 80 databases in science, technology, business economics, humanities, social sciences, and other areas. (AWBERC; Duluth) Chemical Information System (CIS) A commercially available collection of scientific and regulatory databases. It contains numeric, textual, and some bibliographic information in the areas of toxicology, environment, regulations, spectroscopy, chemical and physical properties, and nucleotide sequences. (Regions 1, 3, 5, 10; HQ; NEIC; OPPT) CQ Washington Alert Provides detailed information on the status of bills in Congress; text of bills as printed by GPO; legislative reports from the Congressional Record; floor and committee schedules up to 3 months in advance including late changes, and agendas. (Headquarters Library) Datatimes Datatimes is a Dow Jones News/Retrieval service that has the full text of many newspapers, especially smaller, regional papers. It also provides access to news and press releases and company and industry reports. (Region 5; NEIC) DIALOG A commercial vendor of databases, has more than 200 databases available through its system. The type of information varies with the database accessed; database records may be bibliographic citations/abstracts, directory listing, or statistical tables. Some of the DIALOG databases commonly used by EPA libraries are Pollution Abstracts, ENVIROLINE, Chemical Regulations and Guidelines, Social SciSearch, and The National Technical Information Service (NTIS). (The majority of libraries in the EPA Library Network access DIALOG). Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries—12/9/93 10 ------- Dow Jones A news retrieval service of primarily business information sources. Dow Jones provides full text of newspapers and also wire services. (Region 3) Dunsprint The online service of Dun & Bradstreet, a credit-reporting firm, which provides business information reports for privately and publicly owned companies and government activity reports which list Federal contracts, grants, fines, and debarments for specific companies. (Region 1, 3, 4) EcoNet EcoNet is an international, computer-based communication system serving organizations and individuals who are working for environmental preservation and sustainability. Resources on EcoNet include environmental Grantmakers Association's directory of grantmakers, the Sierra Club National News Report, the National Wildlife Foundation's Conservation Directory, Global Action Network's federal legislative information, action alerts, and newsletters from around the world. EcoNet also offers bulletin boards for posting notices and discussions/ and electronic conferencing. (HQ-INFOTERRA) Ground Water On-line A bibliographic database, it contains references on the occurrence and utilization of surface and ground water, and on water well technology. Indexed titles include trade and technical journals and newsletters, books, and government documents. Because EPA established the Center, there is special emphasis in the database on EPA-sponsored reports. (Regions 7; Las Vegas) JURIS JURIS, the Department of Justice Retrieval and Inquiry System provides computerized access to statutory and case law as well as administrative law, legislative histories, manuals, and briefs. EPA materials on JURIS include OGC Opinions and NEIC's Consent Decree and State Environmental statute databases. The fate of JURIS is currently in question (INFO ACCESS issue 11 12/9/93—Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries ------- #35, November 1993). As of this compilation, JURIS is still available and in use at some EPA libraries. See also EnviroText (Regions 1, 5,10; Law; NEIC) . LEGI-SLATE An online service that contains synopses of every bill and resolution introduced in Congress since the beginning of the 96th Congress in 1979. It contains committee and subcommittee actions, House and Senate floor actions, and all votes taken. Also covers all announcements in the Federal Register including Presidential documents, rules and regulations, proposed rules, and notices of proposed rule making. (Legislative Reference Library) LEXIS/NEXIS LEXIS is the largest full-text legal database in existence, containing federal and state cases, administrative decisions, U.S. Code, CFR, selected state statutes, law reviews, ABA materials, and separate libraries dealing with federal issues: Admiralty; Banking; Bankruptcy; Energy; Environment; Federal Communications; Federal Securities; Federal Tax; International Trade; Labor; Patent, Trademark and .Copyright; Public Contracts; and Trade Regulation. Auto-Cite and Shephard's Citations are also available. NEXIS is a full-text database that contains general and business news. NEXIS sources include magazines, newspapers, wire services, newsletters, and government documents. (Regions 1, 2, 3, 10; HQ; Law; NEIC; OPPT) National Library of Medicine (NLM) Consists of bibliographic citations on biomedical literature, including health care services and administrative, clinical, and policy topics. Special files on population, cancer, and toxic substances are also available on the NLM database. The NLM is the basis for virtually all medical information. TOXLINE a product of the National Library of Medicine, contains citations and abstracts to the worldwide literature in all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and mutagens. Databases Accessible Through EPA Libraries—12/9/93 12 ------- TOXNET is a computerized system of toxicologically oriented data banks operated by the National Library of Medicine. (Regions 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10; AWBERC; Gulf Breeze; HQ; Library Services- RTF; Narragansett; NEIC; OPPT; TIU) National Pesticide Information Retrieval System (NPIRS) Developed by Purdue University, contains information that describes the key characteristics of pesticides, including approximately 50,000 products registered by EPA, as well as State registrations. (Region 4) ORBIT An online service which provides access to more than 70 databases in science, technology, business, economics, humanities, social sciences, and other areas. (Region 5) Scientific and Technical Information Network (STN) STN is a scientific and technical online information network. The databases included in STN include bibliographic, full text, and numeric files. A variety of subjects are covered including chemistry, biology, energy, engineering, patents, construction materials, textiles, math, physics, petroleum, biotechnology, and metallurgy. Sponsored and offered jointly by the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS). CAS Online, a product of STN, contains records for the documents covered since 1967 in the printed version of Chemical Abstracts. Journals, patents, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations from all areas of chemistry and chemical engineering are abstracted and the file is updated biweekly.
