MARCH 1979 ------- Hazardous Waste Management Facilities in the United States This publication (SW-146), which will be issued periodically3 was prepared by ALBERT J. MIES U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY December 1974 ------- Table of Contents Page Page I. Introduction II. User Instructions 2 III. Disposal Methods Key 3 IV. Hazardous Waste Disposal Operations 5 (alphabetically by state) V. Appendix A - List of Mercury Reprocessors 29 Appendix B - List of Solvent Reclaiming Operations 31 Appendix C - Map showing Geographic Distribution of Hazardous Waste Management Facilities ------- INTRODUCTION The following enterprises are in the business of accepting and disposing of various hazardous wastes. The Office of Solid Waste Management Programs does not endorse any of these firms and cannot vouch for the environmental adequacy of their operations. This list, which is furnished as a public service, will be revised quarterly or as OSWMP becomes aware of significant numbers of other enterprises that accept hazardous wastes for disposal. Additional information concerning these and other facilities should be forwarded to Mr. Albert Hayes, Hazardous Waste Management Division (AW-565), OSWMP, EPA, Washington, D.C. 20460, or to the OSWMP representative of the appropriate EPA regional Office. Those wishing to make use of the services of these firms are advised to first evaluate the available environmental control facilities for themselves. Facilities disposing of pesticides or pesticide containers should conform to the "Recommended Procedures for the Disposal and Storage of Pesticides and Pesticide Containers," as published by EPA in the Federal Register. Those utilizing incineration or landfilling should conform to EPA's landfill and incineration guidelines and to any applicable Federal, State or local regulations. ------- User Instructions The data on hazardous waste management operations is presented in a synopsized format. The facility listings are organized by states. Only those states that have hazardous waste management facilities are included; however, many operations maintain an interstate trans- portation capability. Facility formats are abbreviated characterizations of the waste facility's operation; detailed information can be obtained from the individual waste management organization. Format Services: Describes range of operations that facility may perform for a client. Wastes Handled: Includes waste streams accepted and considered by waste facility. Many operations select waste for treat- ment on the basis of analysis of each batch. Wastes Excluded: Generally most facilities do not accept radioactive materials or explosives; exceptions are noted under Wastes Handled. Processing: Describes basic treatment and chemical process used to detoxify waste streams or transform to inert materials. Disposal: Notes ultimate disposal methods which include landfills, ocean dumping, incineration, and deep well injection. Secure landfills are those landfills reported to be lined with impervious material or naturally isolated from groundwater. ------- Ultimate Disposal Methods of Waste Disposal Operations State Number of Operations by State California Colorado Delaware Idaho Illinois Indiana Kentucky Louisana Maine Maryland Massachussetts Michigan Minnesota M-i ssour i Nevada New Jersey New York North Carolina INC c 2Z >* i- m 4-J O C_' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 NE RAT I OK! -a QJ CO ~o U- 1 01 4-j 00 (p -a •t— D" 2 1 1 2 2 i- cu J^ 4-1 O 1 1 1 LA Secure Landfill q l 1 l 1 2 1 if- •a cr re > i. fD •^ cz nj t/) 1 1 2 2 2 1 1 1 3 1 1 4 ? 1— Soil Incorporation 1 4 1 IISPOSAL Oj c OJ 0.
