 Purpose and Scope of Radiation
 Site Cleanup Regulation
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is
developing regulations that will set forth cleanup lev-
els for sites contaminated with radionuclides. These
regulations will protect human health and the envi-
ronment from exposure to ionizing radiation and will
be applicable to sites contaminated with radioactive
material subject to the Atomic Energy Act (AEA) and to
sites covered under the authority of Comprehensive
 Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability
Act (i.e., Superfund sites), including but not limited to
 Federal facilities.

 Public Participation and the
 Development off the Cleanup
 Regulation
EPA has begun to identify and evaluate alternative reg-
ulatory approaches for the proposed cleanup regula-
tions. The Agency recognizes that the selection of a
regulatory approach and the choice of cleanup levels
involve many difficult technical and policy decisions
 with wide-ranging economic and environmental
 implications.
In reaching these decisions, EPA encourages input
from all interested parties, and has developed a com-
prehensive program to facilitate public participation.
The Agency's Public Participation Program has two
objectives: (1) To disseminate information and (2) To
elicit comments and information from the public.
EPA believes that public participation is integral to
 developing and implementing cleanup regulations.

                       Public Meetings
EPA has established a subcommittee under
the auspices of the National Advisor)
                       Council for Environmental Policy and
                       Technology (NACEPTj to provide extra-
                       mural environmental polity information
and advice to the Administrator of EPA
and other Agency officials. Membership of
this subcommittee will consist of individu-
als from a wide variety of government
                       agencies, industry, and public interest
groups, The first meeting witl take place

ERA Radiation Site Cleanup
Electronic Bulletin Board

The electronic bulletin board provides the most
time-efficient and cost-effective means of servic-
ing your needs. It offers around-the-clock access
to documentation available on radiation site
cleanup regulations and EPA's open meetings
schedule.
How to access it
The electronic bulletin board can be accessed
by any computer connected to a modem.
Initiate your communications software to
allow you to dial into the bulletin board and
dial 1-800-700-STDS, if you are dialing from
outside the Washington metropolitan area, or
1-703-790-0825, if you are dialing locally.
Once the bulletin board has been accessed, you
will be prompted to enter your name and address.
You will then have access to a menu of bulletin
board options. From the main menu, you can list
the documents stored on the bulletin, read those
documents, or download them to your system,
upload comments to EPA, or request published
materials concerning radiation site cleanup regu-
lations.
How to download documents
If you know the documents you wish to down-
load, simply list the files, select those you wish to
receive, and hit the key. If you do not
know the documents you wish to receive, you
may need to read through those available before
the selection function can be completed. Once
the documents you wish to receive have been
selected, the system will access your communica-
tion software and begin document transmission.
How to upload your comments
to EPA
Select the comments option from the main menu
and complete the form provided. Once complet-
ed, you can alter, save or delete your comment.
