ABSTRACT This bibliography was compiled during investigations to identify biological parameters that could be used in the assessment of the health effects of 'community exposure to arsenic. References were obtained from many sources up to 1977 for the health effects of arsenic and relevant references on the environmental and other affects. Under seven major specific headings are listed over 1,000 separate literature citations. The bibliographic citations, not annotated, are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the senior author and anonymous articles are listed in alphabetical order by the first word in the title. To allow for quick reference, the citations have been itemized into the seven major specific topic headings... 17. KEY WORDS AND DOCUMENT ANALYSIS DESCRIPTORS b.IDENTIFIERS/OPEN ENDED TERMS c. When compared to other existing bibliographies, it contains a significant number of additional entries in the area of health effects. Due to the additional time and effort required to produce an annotated bibliography, no abstracts were included. This compilation contains, to the best of our knowledge, all references on the health effects of arsenic up to 1977. Topics other than health effects also have been included but are not intended to be exhaustive in that particular area. The collection was done by the Environmental Health Hazard Project of the American Public Health Association under contract to the Office of Toxic Substances of the Environmental Protection Agency. A number of sources were used, including the references of Mr. Ralph Wands, Director, the Advisory Center on Toxicology of the National Academy of Sciences; the foreign literature citations of Dr. Robert J. M. Horton of EPA, Research Triangle Park; the bibliography of Dr. Robert Buechley of the University of New Mexico as well as the MEDLARS search of the National Library of Medicine. These references were then cross-checked with the National Academy of Sciences' report on arsenic, the "Arsenic in the Environment" j bibliography of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and review of the arsenic literature, "Technical Report #7509," by the U.S. Army Medical Bioengineering Research and Development Laboratory, Fort Detrick, Maryland. The citations in the following bibliography on arsenic are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the senior author. Anonymous articles are listed in alphabetical order by the first word in the title. Preceding the bibliography are seven specific topic headings, followed by reference numbers of the relevant citations in the bibliography to allow quick reference. If the article is in a language other than English, slashes appear before and after translated titles. Titles in German, Spanish and French have often been left untranslated. The form of the reference, and the abbreviations for journals, are intended to follow the current usages of Index Medicus. This has at times been difficult for older references, and, for some references, some elements (authors, title, or journal) are missing. Robert J. Carton, Ph.D. U.S.E.P.A. Washington, DC «»; ti' ------- Acknowledgements The authors wish to thank Eraanuel Landau, Ph.D., Project Director of the Environmental Health Hazard Project of the American Public Health Association for encouraging the development of this bibliography and Marion G. Shor, M.S. for her assistance in compiling the early version of the bibliography. Arsenic references were contributed to the project and included in the bibliography and we thank Ralph Wands, of the National Academy of Sciences, Robert Buechley, Ph.D., of University of New Mexico and Robert J.M. Horton, M.D. of EPA Research Triangle Park for these contributions. ------- TABLE OF CONTENTS Foreword, ill Acknowledgments iv Section I Reference Listing 1 Arsenic and Associated Chemicals Analytical Methods Applications of Arsenic Environmental Exposure Health Effects Health Effects Studies Regulations and Comments Section II 7 Bibliography Supplement 98 Abstract 101 ------- SECTION I REFERENCE LISTING ------- REFERENCE LISTING ARSENIC AND ASSOCIATED CHEMICALS ELEMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH ARSENIC Copper 2. 177. 202, 217. 301, 416, 420, 421, 422, 472, 531, 568, 569, 815. 849, 946 Fluoride 215,700 Nickel and cobalt 2,34,93,153,178,223,301,373,389,416,419,420.421.422.472,564.568,633,769,815,816,817,818, 843,917.938 Selenium 'i 233, 286, 287, 308, 405, 707, 761, 916 ' .' j Uranium 2. 24, 71, 72, 222, 465, 568, 769, 784, 786, 817, 818, 843. 869, 917, 928, 945, 946 . j Other : 12,69, 93,176,177,196,197,198,202,217,244,245,252,264,285,286,287,301,308,320,355,367,389, ! 416, 420, 421, 422, 468, 470, 472, 473, 702, 707, 811, 812, 815, 816, 825, 847, 872, 938 •:{ :l MANUFACTURING , !j Pesticide manufacture ' '! 109, 118, 120, 135, 177, 280, 297, 395, 474. 478, 479, 504, 589, 716, 720, 746, 999 |j Not as a pesticide, compound, etc. j! 1,11,21,22,26,37,39,41,42,46,65,102,109,131,132,136,144,157,164,167,182,183,188,208,228, ;! 230, 245, 278, 301,312, 329, 333, 366, 441, 482, 554, 559, 637, 651, 677, 695, 742, 759, 778, 822, 841, j 843,847,857,864,879,910,922,938,979,980,996 i; ANALYTICAL METHODS : TISSUE AND CHEMICAL ANALYTICAL METHODS 6,11,13,119,156,163,206.208,232,242.244,245,254,278,279,314,331,345,390,394,413,431,436, 467,482,494,503,514,517,522,538,539.561,570,668,758,803,806,891,922,929,934,935,936,937, '..] 938, 940, 949, 963, 969, 981, 982. 1001, 1004 ' .; APPLICATION OF ARSENIC GENERAL OR UNSPECIFIED 22, 26, 33, 52, 64, 73, 74, 88, 116,125,134, 144,150.164,179.1,188,190,193,194,197,198, 205, 250, 262, 272, 276, 286, 287, 288, 310, 321, 322, 329, 344, 368, 371, 387, 389, 391. 397, 401, 406, 413, 416, '< 420. 435, 443, 449, 494, 502, 506, 536, 537, 541, 581, 600, 609, 640, 678. 744, 764, 775, 806, 810, 849, ; 855, 862, 868, 873, 890, 923, 930, 932, 953, 964, 973, 979, 994, 996 ; MEDICINAL USE t Dermatitis, esp.
