January 1986 s and U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY Office of Air and Radiation Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards Research Triangle Park, NC 27711 ------- SLANG The Selected Letter and Abbreviated Name Guide (SLANG) is primarily a compilation of word combinations and acronyms. Word combinations and acronyms are words usually formed from the first, or first few letters of several words. Also, this guide contains some words related to subject matter rather than letters. The use of this language in government work increases daily. Newcomers to the government working force, the nongovernment public, and even some longtime Federal workers are occasionally lost in grasping this jargon. To ease this situation, the Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) has printed a list of words used most frequently by Environmental Protection Agency personnel. This Selected Letter and Abbreviated Name Guide (SLANG) contains words submitted by the following sources: the Office of Administration (OA), the Office of Air and Radiation (OAR), the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) - Local 3347. The guide is intended to serve as a routine reference for the EPA user community. For the convenience of the user, the words with their definitions are arranged in alphabetical order with the exception of the Greek and miscel- laneous symbols and the postal abbreviations. Ample space is provided at the end of each letter of the alphabet to allow for the addition of new words or those "unavoidably omitted." In this manner, new words will be readily identified for use and later insertion into a revised guide. Additional words are solicited and can be placed in future revisions of the booklet by contacting Betty Abramson, EPA, MD-14, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina 27711, (919) 541-5694. ------- A A A A A A A A A Argon AA Adverse Action AA Assistant Administrator AA Associate Administrator AA Atomic Absorption AAAS American Association for the Advancement of Science AAEE American Academy of Environmental Engineers AAP Affirmative Action Plan AAP Affirmative Action Program ABAG Association of Bay Area Governments ABMA American Boiler Manufacturers Association AC Actual Commitment AC Advisory Circular A&C Abatement and Control ACE Army Corps of Engineers ACFM Actual cubic feet per minute ACGIH American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists ACL Alternative Concentration Limits ACP Air Carcinogen Policy ADABAS Adaptable Data Base ADBA Adabas Administrator ADI Acceptable Daily Intake ADP Automatic Data Processing ADSS Air Data Screening System AAAAAAAA 1 ------- AAAAAAAA ADT Average Dally Traffic AEA Atomic Energy Act AEERL Air and Energy Engineering Research Laboratory AEROS Aerometric and Emissions Reporting System AES Auger Electron Spectrometry AFCA Area Fuel Consumption Allocation AF6E American Federation of Government Employees AGA American Gas Association AH Allowance Holder AHM Allowance Holder Monthly AIChE American Institute of Chemical Engineers AICUZ Air installation Compatible Use Zones AID .
