BIOLOGICAL PROBLEM
Improper stream regulation
regarding resident warm water-
sport fish species and resident
cool water and migrant cool
water species.
Discharges from Boise-Cascade
(Wallula) are known to have
adversely effected Snake River
migrants through the "Gap" and
on the east side of the pool.
BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS
Gas bubble and other salmonid
diseases. Reduction of habi-
tat niche size at critical
periods of downstream migra-
tion allowing resident pre-
dators greater opportunity for
feeding. Flows are held steady
for resident fish spawning but
vary for desirable species.
Downstream salmonid migrants
reach Columbia and Snake Rivers
in this area at a critical time
and have a difficult time of
passing through the pool because
of lack of sufficient flow and
orientation.
Migrant passage to natal streams
a problem due to lack of current
in critical areas into the Snake
River, especially spring and
late summer. Diatom blooms from
irrigation returns.

BIOLOGICAL PROBLEM
Past poor logging practices
(Mill and Whet stone Hollow
Creeks), land and water manage-
ment practices and diversions
in lower reaches of Walla Walla
and Touchet Rivers.
Below College Place and City of
Walla Walla the stream is total-
ly diverted - flow is from STP.
BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS
Temperature, pH, turbidity,
siltation, NH^, and low flow
and spring flooding in the
lower reaches have reduced
habitat quality to minimum
in most of the watershed.
Except upper Mill and Whetstone
Hollow Creeks which are ade-
quate for steelhead passage
and spawning these reaches
are acceptable.

BIOLOGICAL PROBLEM
Glacial melt sediments and
spring scouring in the headwater
streams from Mt. Rainier. Pas-
sage restricted by falls (River
Mile 88.5). Hydromodif ications
above Kosmos have enhanced bio-
logical productivity by flow
regulations from RM 88.5 - 0.0.
Sediments settle in the reser-
voirs. Upstream migrants passage
impaired by dams, but passage
and runs enhanced when possible
by PPL at hatchery and above.
Streams have recovered from past
poor logging practices that pro-
duced silt, turbidity, and low
flows. Logging roads by con-
struction and location drasti-
cally altered the streams 40 to
50 years ago but are recovering.
Forest fires raised niche qual-
ity problems in the late 30' s.
BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS
!Almost complete destruction
:of niche quality and quan-
'tity in several headwater
streams; glacial melt; sedi-
ment; and scouring. Two
power dams regulate flow
and, with hatchery operations
by PPL, have greatly enhanced
the migrant and resident
salmonid fisheries.
* Above Kosmos there is a
scouring effect.
Elimination of some niches
for a time. Presently much
improved for chinook, coho,
pink and chum salmon and
winter run steelhead and
cutthroat trout.

BIOLOGICAL PROBLEM
Poor logging and road construc-
tion practices in the 1920 's and
1930' s. Streams are recovering
at an accelerated rate now that
the watersheds have been seeded
and top soil stabilized.
BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS
Silt, sediment, turbidity,
' and very low summer flows
reduced niche quality and
.quantity for almost 30
years. Fires added adverse
effects to watersheds which
added to recovery time.
Some improvement still
ongoing.

Problem - Cause
Good canoeing in certain sections. Good fishing for chinook,
coho, steelhead, and native and planted rainbow. Good access
to mainstem and most tributaries.
High spring runoff and low late summer flow. Does have
chinook salmon and steelhead trout in season - seasonal
rainbow plants. Holds true in lower region, but for rest
of stream, flow gradient is too steep.

Problem - Cause
Turbidity, silt, sediments from fall and spring runoff in
upper reaches (i.e. above upper lake). Anadroinous and resi-
dent salmonid species enhanced by large plants of hatchery
fish. Bummer flows regulated by dams which enhances niche
quality. Best steelhead and summer
run cutthroat stream in the northwest. Many good campsites.
Good access.
Moderately good access. One boat ramp at ?--9§burg. Flow and
spawning problems 40 years ago from poor* and over-logging,
but presently recovered. Good for resident cutthroats and
migrant salmonids and smelt. Fishing pressure heavy for size.
Logging debris cleared.
