SUMMARY TABULATION OF SELECTED
EPA ACTIVITIES CONCERNING TOXIC CHEMICALS
by the
OFFICE OF TOXIC SUBSTANCES
U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
WASHINGTON, O.C. 20460
APRIL 1976
-------
INTRODUCTION
The tabulation in this Report summarizes EPA's current activities directed
to selected toxic chemicals, with emphasis on current and near-term regulatory
activities. Also, appropriate published references are identified which should
help the interested reader understand the details of the activities.
Included in the tabulation are substances for which regulations or standards
have been set or proposed under EPA's various regulatory authorities. Also
included are substances which are being monitored or analyzed either pursuant to
a Federal Register notice or through studies being conducted at the initiative
of particular offices as part of their program activities. The comprehensive lists
of substances addressed under Section 311 (spills) of the Federal Water Pollution
Control Act and Section 3 (registration) of FIFRA/FEPCA are not included; however,
indications are made where such substances appear pursuant to some other regulation
or study. A detailed listing of chemicals registered pursuant to Section 211
(fuel additives) of the Clean Air Act is not included.
In some cases, a regulation will refer to a class of substances rather
than individual chemicals. The class name is included in the appropriate place
on the alphabetical list and, in addition, indications are made in the appropriate
column for specific chemicals falling within that class when appropriate. An
exception is that radioactive materials have been excluded from the list entirely.
Some EPA activities and some chemicals of concern may have been overlooked
in the preparation of this initial Report. Hopefully, these oversights will be
corrected in future revisions.

FOOTNOTES
1. Effluent Guidelines currently in effect and in the proposal stage
require some limitations on discharges of some chemicals in selected
industries. Effluent Guidelines are end-of-pipe limitations, and are
not necessarily transferrable from one industry to another. The relevant
references are as follows:
"Summary of Final Effluent Limitations Guidelines for Existing Sources
and Standards of Performance for New Sources", EPA 330/9-74-001,
August 1974.
40 CFR 401, Revised as of July 1, 1975.
39 FR 31485, August 28, 1974, Meat Products (Proposed).
40 FR 4101, January 27, 1975, Phosphate Manufacturing (Proposed).
40 FR 8030, February 24, 1975, Ferroalloy Manufacturing (Proposed).
40 FR 8514, February 27, 1975, Nonferrous Metals Manufacturing
(Proposed).

40 FR 51722, November 6, 1975, Ore Mining and Dressing (Proposed).
41 FR 902, January 5, 1976, Organic Chemicals Manufacturing (Proposed).
In addition, the Organic Chemicals and Inorganic Chemicals Manufacturing Point
Source Categories are subdivided according to, and lists are given for, significant
products and processes. Many products and by-products from these Point Source
Categories have troublesome public health implications. By-products have not been
listed with the regulations in the Federal Register. However, some of the problematic
products have been listed in 41 FR 902, January 5, 1976, are as follows:
acrylonitrile isopropanol
adiponitrile maleic anhydride
benzoic acid methyl salicylate
butyl alcohol nitroaniline
citronellol phthalic anhydride
cumene tannic acid
hydrazine p-xylene
ionone
