The Community Studies on Pesticides projects are
composed of comprehensive ecological and epidemi-
ological studies in various areas with heavy pesticide
usage throughout the United Slates. The purpose of
these studies is to determine the effects on man of
long-term exposure to pesticides.

Within each study area, data are obtained continu-
ously on the types and quantities of pesticides used:
when, where, and how they are applied; and the
purpose for which they are used. Concurrently, levels
of pesticides and their metabolities in people and
various elements of the environment are monitored.
Much data has already been collected, and the results
ol this research should eventually provide the means
to evaluate the movement of pesticides in the
environment and how they enter man. In addition,
information from these studies will indicate the
relative importance of potential sources of contami-
nation for man and offer some indication of the
metabolic fate, excretion, and deposition of pesti-
cides and their metabolites in man.

Associated with the measurement of pesticides in
humans and the environment, epidemiological studies
of selected population groups that have high or
unusual exposure to pesticides are being made to
ascertain any health stresses exerted by pesticide
chemicals. Concurrently, laboratory and clinical
examinations of people occupationally exposed to
pesticides are carried out to determine changes in
their health status and to discover and evaluate any
causal relationship to pesticides.

fourteen of these studies, conducted under contract
with State health departments and universities, are
now in progress in Arizona, California, Colorado,
Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi,
New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and
Washington. As these studies progress, the data that
are gathered and evaluated will provide a better
understanding of the risks versus the benefits of using
pesticides as related to public health.
