     A commercial manufacturer of capillary columns used in gas chromatography
tests the columns with a dioxin.standard prior to sale.  Two wastes are generated;
one containing 700 nanograms of a mixture of 7 tetrachloro dioxins per year,
and the other containing 1 to 2 grams of both 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and penta-
chlorophenol. These wastes are not covered by the dioxin rule promulgated on
January 14, 1985, because they (as well as most laboratory wastes) do not
result from the manufacturing processes described in the rule. These dioxin
wastes should not be mixed with other hazardous wastes since these could contain
solubilizing solvents.
