HOFFMAN'S HIGHLIGHTS
See the new Broker feature: PAGE TWO
In a recent survey, Broker readers requested more
information on environmental education, databases in
CD-ROM format, EPA authors, library services and a
variety of other topics. Beginning with this issue, the
Broker has a new feature, PAGE TWO, to provide
information on special resources and services available at
the Headquarters Library, including suggestions made in
the survey. The first PAGE TWO feature is a tip sheet on
how to manage EPA publications from your office.
If you have any comments on items featured in PAGE
TWO, or if you would like to suggest a topic for an
upcoming issue, contact Mary Hoffman, Head Librarian,
at 382-5922.

Where Have All Your Publications Gone?
Do you get phone calls for copies of publications printed by your Office years (or months) ago? Has
the library called and asked for that contractor report you received last year because they don't have
a copy?
We have a solution to ease your many searches for requested publications or reference materials.
It can save valuable staff time, resources, and storage space.
The Headquarters Library estimates that about 20% of EPA publications requested from them are
not available in our own library! We would like to correct that situation by obtaining copies of your
publications for the EPA Headquarters Library. The following steps outline ways to assure the
availability of your publications within EPA and to the public:
• Available within EPA: The Headquarters Library develops a permanent record of your
publication on an Agency-wide database accessible to EPA offices in Headquarters, Regions
and laboratories.
Send at least one copy (two if possible) of every publication to the Headquarters
Library, Attn. Mary Hoffman, PM-211 A. If you have copies of old publications,
and aren't sure the library has them, send a list. We will let you know those we
don't have.
•• Available to the public: The steps for making EPA publications available to the public
depend on the type of information and the audience.
— Scientific and Technical Reports: Send to the U.S. National Technical Information
Service (NTIS). NTIS is a key service for technology transfer and makes Federal
information available worldwide through many sources. For procedures, either call
Fran Roberts, NTIS, at (202) 487-4634, or ask the Library for a copy of NTIS forms
and procedures.
Note: ORD publications are routinely sent to NTIS through the Center for
Environmental Research Information (CERI).
— Non-technical Reports: The Public Information Center (PIC) uses EPA non-technical
information to respond to thousands of requests from the public. Call Kevin Rosseel,
at (202) 475-7751, to request PIC services.
• Special Needs: Many EPA program offices have developed clearinghouses, hotlines, and
bulletin boards to provide outreach information and publication distribution for priority
program activities or special user groups. For assistance on developing and coordinating
this kind of activity, contact Deborah Ross, National Public Access Program Manager, at
(202) 475-7705.
