Introduction
This annotated compendium of educational materials on environmental issues has been
compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Entries are diverse with
materials described ranging from workbooks to curriculum plans, to posters and
pamphlets, to newsletters, films, and computer software. /
The publication's citations have been organized into two major sections according to
the private and public sector organizations that have developed and produced
environmental education materials for teachers, other educators, and students. A third
section describes opportunities for educators to participate in workshops and to use
other resources that can enable them to better cover environmental topics in their work
with young people.
Users of this publication are encouraged to review citations and then contact the
organizations whose materials appear to be most suitable for achieving particular
informational and/or educational goals. This should help ensure awareness of the most
current materials available and any costs for them.
EPA hopes to expand and update this publication as additional resources are called
to its attention. Please make any recommendations for materials to be included by
contacting:

can also be used separately to bring rain forest issues into the
lives of students. The package includes: a 28-page booklet with
color photographs to introduce the rain forest, its ecology, its
importance to the world and the threats endangering this
ecosystem; a teacher's manual that includes background
information and recommended activities; a full-color poster
showing animal and plant species threatened by poorly planned
forest use; a black and white poster illustrating the layers of a
rain forest located in Borneo; and "Rain Forest Rap", a six-

materials illustrate how illegal and excessive trade endangers
and may cause extinction of many species of wildlife.
Elephants, spotted cats, sea turtles, crocodiles, and parrots are

routinely undermined by poachers and smugglers. Animals,
ivory, furs, shells and hides are illegally brought into the
United States and then offered for sale to Americans, the
world's largest consumers of wildlife. The kit includes: an 80-
slide show and script entitled "Wildlife Trade: The Poacher, the
Law, and the Consumer", an educator's guide, factsheets on
traffic in heavily traded wildlife species and products; two full-
color posters, a brochure, and a bumper sticker.
Tropical Rain Forest Teacher's Kit. (Grades 6-12. Available
in Spanish only). Provides background information on the
ecology of the tropical rain forest and the environmental
problems that presently affect the functioning of this ecosystem.
Suggests activities teachers can use to add tropical rain forest
topics to their existing curriculum. Includes a teacher's guide,
coloring book, posters, rain forest simulation game, and a
student's packet of materials.

Coral Reef Teacher's Kit. (Grades 6-9. All materials in
Spanish as well as English). Provides teachers with
background information on coral reefs, their importance in the
ecosystem, and the wildlife found there. Includes various
activities that teachers can use to communicate this information
to their students. Contains teacher's guide, coloring book,
poster, and color slides. Contact Gertrude James at the above

W.E.T. (Water Education Team) Program (Grades 4-6).
The W.E.T. Program is intended to supplement the regular
elementary curriculum or for use as a special project by youth

environment. Through water quality activities, student teams
study pollution problems, understand the importance of water
