                          INTRODUCTION
The Pathfinder to the Microfiche Collection at the
Headquarters Library is a guide to the wealth of information
available in microfiche form in the Headquarters Library.
It was prepared by Mary Hoffman, Chief Reference Librarian
and Lisa Young, Reference Librarian. The purpose of the
Pathfinder is to make the microfiched information more
accessible to EPA staff.

Many types of information are filmed and produced in
the microfiche card format. Entire documents are
reproduced on one or more cards. The documents are then
read through a microfiche reader that shows the document
page by page.

     The Headquarters library microfiche collection
includes government reports (including EPA reports),
laws, legislative reports, environmental proceedings and
articles, telephone directories, and other information.

Most of the microfiched documents are indexed by
author, title and keyword in printed indexes and in
online databases. The library staff assists library
users in retrieving documents by topic.

The Pathfinder lists descriptive information about
each set of microfiche including: name, subject, date,
publisher, updates, location, filing order, index and
comments. Most of the microfiche is kept in an automated
storage device called the "minitrieve" located at the back
of the library. The library staff show library users how to
use the minitrieve and the microfiche readers.
