The Core List includes books, journals, web sites and databases that EPA librarians feel to be particularly valuable for environmental information collections. EPA Test Method Index http://www.epa.gov/epahome/index/ This Index to EPA Test Methods was developed by the US EPA Region 1 Library, to improve access to EPA test methods. Test methods are approved procedures for a variety of regulatory and scientific purposes. Sources of EPA Documents National Service Center for Environmental Publications http://www.epa.gov/ncepihom/ 1-800-490-9198 This service distributes EPA publications free in hardcopy, CD ROM and other multi-media formats, with an inventory of over 7,000 titles. National Technical Information Service (NTIS) http://www.ntis.gov 1-703-605-6000 This service from the U.S. Department of Commerce distributes a large variety of scientific and technical publications for a fee. Visitor Services Most of the 28 libraries are open to the general public, providing access to EPA reports and commercial publications supporting the activities of a regional office, laboratory, or program. ------- The EPA Library Network, established in 1971, is composed of libraries in the Agency's headquarters, regional and field offices, research centers, and specialized laboratories located throughout the country. Network Coordination The National Library Network Program provides leadership and direction for the libraries, ensuring their support of the Agency's mission. The program provides a wide range of services to the EPA libraries, facilitating communications, networking and resource sharing, and provides technical assistance on all aspects of library management. EPA Desktop Library The National Library Network has developed an interface to a large variety of resources for EPA staff to access at their desks. Staff can instantly access journal articles, news, reports, reference materials, and current awareness services from their own offices. In addition, individual EPA libraries offer training for staff as well as mediated searching to aid researchers in compiling resources for their studies. http://intranet.epa.gov/desktop/ • :' \ ------- Circulation Most of the library materials are available for circulation among EPA staff. Members of the public may borrow library materials through Interlibrary Loan Contact your local public, school or university library arrange for an interlibrary loan. Collection The combined network collection contains a wide range of general information on environmental protection and management; basic sciences such as biology and chemistry; applied sciences such as engineering and toxicology; and extensive coverage of topics featured in legislative mandates such as hazardous waste, drinking water, pollution prevention, and toxic substances. As of October, 2001, EPA libraries held: 100,000 books and reports 75,000 EPA documents 59,000 unique titles in microfiche 2,700 journal & newsletter titles videotapes and audio cassettes a variety of online resources CD-ROMs The Library Network provides access to its collections through the Online Library System (OLS), web-based database of the library holdings.
