Columbus, Ohio Printed on Recycled Paper ------- SEMINAR SERIES FOCUS A vast amount of the nation's solid waste is currently deposited in landfills, and available land for disposal operations is becoming scarce. New technologies and management approaches in reducing and handling solid waste should be considered. EPA has established a 25% reduction goal for waste going to landfills and several states have implemented regulations for diverting waste from land disposal. Since these regulations are generally administered at the county level, counties are responsible for producing a plan to meet them. This seminar series will address planning issues in solid waste management for rural, county and local governments. It will focus on integrating new technologies in a total program of municipal solid waste management, and will provide information on specific issues such as collection alternatives, source reduction, recycling, and composting. The seminar will also include information on both new and existing landfills, presentations on case studies of successful state and local programs, and a demonstration of software used for developing integrated municipal solid waste management plans. TARGETED AUDIENCE This seminar is designed for federal, state, and local government officials and regulatory personnel, environmental scientists, engineers, environmental consultants, and other individuals with responsibilities for the management of solid waste. Presentations, demonstrations, and exhibitions will provide detailed technical and environmental information that will assist planners in developing integrated solid waste management plans for their communities.
