EPA New England
Pesticide Program
LrA IS IMG federal agency responsible
for regulating the risks and benefits posed by
pesticide use. The national office, the Office
of Pesticide Programs is responsible for
registering pesticide products intended for sale
and use in the United States, for developing
national policies and rules, and for providing
guidance to regional and state programs.
EPA has developed many regulatory and
educational programs to protect human health
and the environment from pesticides. These
include registering pesticides for specific
uses, setting standards to protect workers,
and educating consumers about pesticides.
Other special programs include water quality,
the Strategic Agriculture Initiative (SAI), the
Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program
(PESP), endangered species protection, and
worker safety programs.
The EPA New England Regional Office
provides a key link between the national and
state pesticide programs. EPA New England
Pesticide program staff address all pesticide
inquiries that are directed to the regional
office. This includes providing information
and assistance to New England states and
tribes, as well as congressional members,
farmers, educators, businesses, and the
public.
EPA New England pesticide regulatory partners
are the six New England pesticide State Lead
Agencies (SLAs) which work closely with EPA
to implement pesticide policies and initiatives
and enforce state and federal pesticide
regulations. EPA New England provides financial
and technical support to the SLAs.
