16. ABSTRACT
This report is a companion volume to the report entitled, "Evaluation of the
Environmental Effects of Western Surface Coal Mining." It contains a tabular
Summary of general information, and is specifically designed to evaluate the sur-
face mining methods presently employed in the mining of western coal in arid and
semi-arid regions, and to evaluate the effects these methods have on the environ-
ment. The information was used in classifying western mining situations into
categories within which physical and technological factors were fairly homogeneous,
in identifying the potential extent and severity of the effects of those mining
operations on the environment, and in determining the frequency of use of alter-
native reclamation practices.
