What Is WasteWise?
  The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's WasteWise program is a free, volun-
tary partnership program that helps organiza-
tions reduce solid waste, while saving money
and helping the environment at the same
time. WasteWise participants receive free, per-
sonal technical assistance, networking oppor-
tunities, and awards and recognition for suc-
cessful waste reduction efforts. It is a flexible
program, allowing partners to design solid
waste reduction programs tailored to their
individual needs. Since 1994, WasteWise has
grown to over 1,100 partners from govern-
ment, business, and non-profit organizations.

What Is a WasteWise
Endorser?

   WasteWise endorsers are organizations that
recognize the value of WasteWise and actively
promote it to their members or constituents.
More than 114 trade associations, municipali-
ties, local waste management districts, and
government agencies are serving as endorsers.
   These organizations have committed to
conducting a WasteWise membership cam-
paign within 6 months of joining and then
periodically provide information to their
members or constituents about the WasteWise
program and/or waste reduction and recycling.

-------
"We support WasteWise because it is a
one-stop program that is simple to do yet
provides in-depth information, support,
examples to follow, and the necessary tools
for businesses to set and meet waste
reduction goals. WasteWise enhances and
supports our mission. It's a perfect fit."
—South Carolina Department ol Health and
                   I'.nvironmcntal Control (SC DHl'.C)

Although endorsers are welcome to join WasteWise
as partners as well, they are not required to do so.
The primary role of an endorser is to help promote
WasteWise and share waste reduction information.
As a WasteWise endorser, you demonstrate envi-
ronmental stewardship and a commitment to
waste reduction, which is of increasing impor-
   tance in today's society.
You have the opportunity to help your members
achieve substantial cost savings through waste
reduction, giving them a competitive edge.
You have the opportunity to be recognized for
your efforts in publications such as the
WasteWise Bulletin and WasteWise Update, press
   releases, and at WasteWise events.
You are eligible to compete for the WasteWise
Endorser of the Year Award, which recognizes
endorsers' outstanding efforts to promote the pro-
gram and their success in recruiting new partners.
WasteWise provides endorsers with a variety of
                                                      resources, including promotional and technical
                                                      materials, publications, and personal assistance
                                                      from a WasteWise representative.
Endorsers are an important part of the
WasteWise program because they help spread the
word about WasteWise and waste reduction. The
South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control (SC DHEC), for example,
spreads the WasteWise message to organizations
across the state through printed materials such as
mailings, magazine articles, visual displays, and an
extensive Web site, which includes a direct link to
the WasteWise Web site. DHEC staff also take the
opportunity to promote WasteWise during regular
on-site visits to state organizations.
The City of Clifton, New Jersey, promotes waste
prevention and the WasteWise program through its
community education programs and through its
work with the local Chamber of Commerce. Local
businesses and organizations are introduced to the
WasteWise program on a regular basis. The local
government proudly displays the WasteWise logo
on its Clean Communities Award certificates and a
variety of publications as well.
