Accessing PIES
Anyone can access PIES using either an IBM (or
compatible) PC, Apple, or a dumb terminal equipped
with a modem (1200 or 2400 baud), and appropriate
communications software (e.g., CrossTalk™).

Note: If you do not have access to a PC with a mo-
dem, you can still  access information in PIES by
calling the hotline numbers listed on the back of this
brochure.

To access PIES directly, set your PC communications
software to no parity, 8 data bits, and 1 stop bit:

Using CrossTalk™, type in the bold characters at the
"Command7" prompt:

Note: You may have to prefix the number with "8" or
"9" to access an outside line, or "1" for long distance
calls, as appropriate to your installation

If this is your first call to PIES you must answer some
brief questions and select and enter a unique pass-
word.  You must remember your password for
subsequent calls to the system!

Once you have accessed PIES, all functions are easily
performed using abbreviated commands.
For example, type:
          B - to look at a Bulletin,
          R - to Read a message,
          E - to Enter a message,
          OPEN - to OPEN a data base, or
          J - to Join a mini-exchange.
PIES is also equipped with a built-in help function;
anytime you need help with a command, type H
followed by the command you need help with. For
example, enter: H B for help reading news bulletins..

A "User Guide" is available and may be obtained by
calling one of the PIES contacts listed in this brochure.

analyzed to allow EPA to focus on pollution preven-
tion needs. The frequency and success of data base
searches will be used by EPA to identify data gaps.
