How to Join
Joining Climate Wise is an easy and productive three-step process:
Step #1: Complete a Climate Wise Partnership Agreement. This
simple one-page form asks you to designate a Climate Wise contact
ami agree to
• Establish a process for identifying and subsequently
implementing cost-effective energy efficiency and
pollution prevention actions
• Submit a CUmate Wise Action Plan within 6 months.
• Annually report the results of your actions to EPA
and DOE through the Voluntary Reporting of
Greenhouse Gases Program.
Once you sign the agreement, your organization is officially
on board. As a participant, you'll have the opportunity to
work with a Climate Wise Codirector or representative,
who can help you shape specific Climate Wise actions
and put you in touch with technical and financial
resources, as needed. Program tools such as the
Climate Wise Opportunities Assessment Guide, Case
Study Compendium, and peer exchange network will
help you identify cost-effective options. Climate
Wise companies are often surprised by the
number of improvements they can make with a
minimal investment of capital.
If your organization already
has a ii'ell-ilcveloped strategy

strategy for increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. In the

• Identity emission reduction actions and
implement at ion methods
• Indicate whether actions are new, accelerated, or expanded
• Identity technical assistance needs.
Step #3: Report results and strive for continuous improvement.
As a Climate Wise Partner, you'll annually report your achievements
to the Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Program. The pro-
gram provides a comprehensive, flexible way tor you to report a
large array ot emission reduction projects while bypassing
sections not applicable to your operations. During
your initial reporting cycle, you may
also include existing projects
that were initiated by your
*. i mipany after 1990, but prior to
enrollment. This will allow you
to track and be recognized for past
contributions to national emission
reduction goals. As you annually
assess results, you may chtxxsc to
update and refine your Action Plan.
That way you can drop methods that
are no longer feasible and add new
actions in order to maintain or exceed
original emission reduction targets.

How Climate Wise Is
Paying Off
Climate Wise Partners currently represent almost 7% of I
industrial energy use. What's more, energy efficiency and pollu-
tion prevention actions are producing tangible results.
^~ DuPont estimates that its actions will reduce greenhouse
gas emissions equivalent to 18 million metric tons of CC^
by the year 2000. DuPont's energy efficiency improve-
ments include switching boiler fuels, improving steam
balance, decreasing waste heat, and optimizing system
performance in aeration blowers. Their actions are already
producing savings of $31 million annually.
^- Georgia-Pacific is establishing energy management teams,
upgrading boiler controls and operations, reducing waste
wood sent to landfills, and increasing carbon sequestra-
tion through forestry programs.
^~ General Motors is reducing more than 200,000 metric tons
of CC>2 per year by switching from coal to natural gas at
five steam generating facilities (boiler controls, a low
NOX burner and plans for cogeneration are underway
at two others). The first of 11 facility energy audits has
identified procedural changes and projects saving 19%
of total energy use. GM's commitment also focuses on
partcipation in Green Lights and the energy and waste
activities of its suppliers.
^^- Fetzer Vineyards envisions being 100%. solar-powered by
2015 and reducing power usage more than'50% by 21s
even with anticipated growth. Feizer also plans to use
electric or natural-gas service vehicles.
