   The U.S. Environmental
  Protection Agency (EPA)
 and the U.S. Department
 of Energy (DOE) promote
 energy efficiency because
     electricity generation
 contributes to air pollution,
   including 35 percent of
       all-U.S. emissions
       of carbon dioxide.
      It also accounts for
    75 percent of all U.S.
 emissions of sulfur dioxide
       and 38 percent of
        nitrogen oxides.
         By using more
        energy-efficient
  equipment in our homes
     and offices, we can
  reduce this pollution—
     while saving money.
Why Energy-Efficient Residential Light Fixtures?
American homes contain over
3 billion light fixtures. The energy
used to operate these fixtures
amounts to about 138 billion
kilowatt-hours of energy per
year—between 10 and 15% of
total residential electricity use.
This costs consumers nearly
$11 billion annually and results in
emissions of approximately
100 million tons of carbon dioxide.
Most residential fixtures use
incandescent light bulbs, a
technology that has remained
basically unchanged for
generations. Studies have
shown that 25% of a typical
home's fixtures account for 75%
of lighting energy. By
introducing energy-efficient
fixtures for these "high-use"
sockets, (which typically include
kitchens, table and floor fixtures
in living rooms, and outdoor
fixtures) 70 billion kilowatt-hours
could be saved annually.
If you have a conventional light fixture near your front door, you have the
opportunity to double your savings on operating costs by using an
ENIHGY STM compliant fixture.
What are EPA and DOE Doing About It?
Partnership agreements have
been signed* with leading fixture
manufacturers to recognize the
most energy-efficient models.
EPA and DOE will work with
these manufacturers to promote
superior products that qualify for
the EPA/DOE ENERGY STAR label.
The agencies will also promote
ENERGY STAR labeled light fixtures
to utilities and organizations that
purchase many residential-type
fixtures, such as universities
and hotels.

What is an ENERGY STAR Labeled Light Fixture ?
* Two types of light fixtures are the equivalent amount of light based" efficient light bulb.
(lumens) as incandescent The efficient light bulbs used
  covered under this Program:
  those "hardwired" into a
  home, such as a ceiling
  mounted light; and those
  fixtures that are "portable,"
  including floor or table lamps.
  The hardwired fixtures include
  both indoor and outdoor
  residential models.

* Fixtures that carry the ENERGY
  STAR label meet energy
  efficiency and quality criteria
  to assure that consumers will
  not sacrifice performance to
  save energy. This new
  generation of fixtures for the
home will be designed to emit
                                   models while matching the
                                   color rendering and light
                                   temperature that consumers
                                   are accustomed to in their
                                   homes.

                                 * Most ENERGY STAR compliant
                                   residential light fixtures are
                                   "dedicated" fixtures, meaning
                                   that they are designed to
                                   operate only an energy-
                                   efficient light source. The
                                   advantage of dedicated
fixtures is that you don't have
to buy a new ballast every
time the bulb burns out —
                                   you just replace the "pin-
in these fixtures also last as
   much as three times longer
   than typical incandescent
   bulbs. The ENERGY STAR
   Program does not include
   screw-in compact fluorescent
   bulbs used to retrofit
   incandescent lights.

* Convenience is also an
   important feature of the new
   ENERGY STAR labeled fixtures.
   The indoor models start
   immediately and operate
   without the low level hum
   typical of the older generation
   of fluorescent fixtures. Some
of the portable models will also
  feature dimming or switching
  capabilities. The outdoor
  fixtures will automatically shut
  off during daylight hours and
  some models will have motion
  sensors that allow lights to
  come on automatically
  when needed.

* Reliability and safety
  ' performance criteria must be
met by any fixture carrying the
  ENERGY STAR label. The fixtures
  carry warranties and must be
  tested to applicable National
  Electric Code and ANSI/IEEE
  standards.

It's easy to buy ENERGY STAR
labeled products; just look for
the ENERGY STAR logo, or
designate ENERGY STAR when
writing procurement
specifications. ENERGY STAR
products will be available

                                The EPA is encouraging
consumers to ask for ENERGY STAR
                                labeled residential light fixtures.
If you or your organization want
                                to learn more about maximizing
its purchasing power to help the
environment and save on energy
bills, please contact EPA. In

ENERGY STAR Labeled Torchiere = $150 Total Average Savings
A popular indoor light fixture is
the 300w halogen torchiere — a
6 foot tall floor lamp. An ENERGY
STAR alternative torchiere looks
the same and can put out the
same amount of light (lumens),
yet it can save consumers $150
plus over the life of the fixture.*
An added safety benefit is that
the ENERGY STAR labeled torchiere
                                operates at a significantly lower
                                temperature than the
                                750°-1,000°F halogen.
* Assuming a 65w CFL. fixture life of 10.000
hours and energy cost of JO.OB/kWh
