A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM CHARLES SCHULZ

I have long been committed to doing what I can to help preserve our environ-
ment. I was happy to accept the appointment to serve as honorary Chairman
of the American Lung Associations' Christmas Seal Campaign. President
Carter's letter was an additional spur that led me to design the film, "Charlie
Brown Clears The Air." This storyboard is the basis of that film. Each draw-
ing can be studied, and each developing sequence can be examined. What you
then have is a more personal and intimate experience with Charlie Brown
and all his friends.

The American Lung Association and the Environmental Protection Agency
know that there are many ways to start "Clearing the Air," some old, some
new Our film alone is not the solution to the problem of air pollution and a
totally improved environment, but it is, I believe, a special way of involving
young minds in seeing, understanding and taking upon themselves a sense
of direct self-concern and self-responsibility for their environment.

It is from such a growing sense that we can achieve the better world for our-
selves our children and the future generations of our nation. Charlie Brown
has become concerned, and concern teads to action. I hope you will join him
in the same concern and meaningful action to clear the air.

-------
The following pages reproduce the
original storyboard. Several
sequences were changed when the
final film was made.

-------
C. BROWN: "There are different
ways of training dogs. I've been
reading about the 'shake and
throw* method of training puppies."
C. BROWN: "A mother dog can't
hit a puppy so she picks it up,
shakes it and then drops it."
LINUS: "I can't believe a puppy
would learn anything from that..."
                                         r\
LINUS: "On the other hand, I guess
                                          he might learn a little..."

LINUS: "Snoopy seems a little edgy
lately, Charlie Brown. What's the
problem, that cat next door?"
C. BROWN: "No, it's the cat's
owner."
LINUS: "The cat's owner???"
C. BROWN: "He keeps burning his
leaves and trash in the backyard."
LINUS: "So what?"
C. BROWN: "—so, it's causing soot
and dirt all over Snoopy's dog
house."

LUCY: "Why don't you give a report
on it at school?"
C. BROWN: "Gee, that's great!"
C. BROWN: "Oh. Snoopy's dog
house and his motorcycle. The
littering on our ball field and the
smog..."
C. BROWN: "Report? How could I
give .a report?"
LUCY: "Here. This pamphlet from
the American Lung Association
gives all the facts."
LUCY: "That'll be 20 cents. I'm
giving you a discount because it's
a good cause. The pamphlet from
ALA is free for the asking."

"Each of us breathes 35 pounds of

      of aerial garbage each year."

C. BROWN: "That's terrible!"
      C. BROWN: "Some of the ways we
pollute our air are as follows:"
C. BROWN: "Cars that don't have
good air pollution devices are a
major cause."

        AIR CONSERVATION OBJECTIVES
         AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION
Air conservation, smoking and health,
.and occupational health make up the
environmental health program of the
American Lung Association. They
provide a base for attaining the
Association's long-range goal of
controlling and preventing lung
disease.
The air conservation program of ALA
and its 200 affiliated lung associations
       throughout the country encompasses
       several broad areas: (1) education,
       (2) regulation, (3) legislation,
       (4) litigation when appropriate, and
       (5) research.
  The ALA receives counsel and
  technical advice from its National
  Air Conservation Commission and
  from the Scientific Assembly on
  Environmental and Occupational
Health of its medical section, the
  American Thoracic Society.

ALA therefore serves the nation as
  an expert resource regarding the
health effects of air pollution. It
  fulfills its advocacy role with
 . scientific validity.
If you would like to know more about
air pollution — or would like to
help in the program to control
pollution — you are invited to write
        or phone your lung association.
        Special leaflets and other materials
        are readily available.
