The purpose of assembling certain selected lafe history attributes

of fish species is to allow the utilization os such data in characteri-

zing relationships among and within those same species. Much of what we

have to learn about species and their relationships to their environ-

ments is encompassed by expressions of their adaptation to differing

environments and to environmental changes. These expressions include

life history attributes among others.

Such data as longevity of individuals within populations of a

species, maximum size attained by individuals vithin a population and

the n-.aximuF. number of eggs produced by individual females vithin popu-

laitons have proven useful in conjecturing about survival strategies

and, indeed, testing hypotheses about those survival strategies. The

data presented in Table 1 of this paper vere collected for thp express

purpose of testing a hypothesis about the tolerance-' of species to toxi-

cants. The usefulness of this data to others cannot be guaged until

they are made available in the open literature and others will have had

the opportunity to utilize them for their unique purposes.

This data set is not exhaustive. Several important sources of life

history data, notably United States Government publications, publica-

tions of state acsdpmies of science and state conservation agencies vere

not examined. However some 450 populations among 177 species are repre-

It is clear that ol the life history studies done irost were on

species of either commercial or recreational importance and if this

compilation of data is a fair representation of all such life history .

data available on North American fishes then we have hardly scratched

the surface and the data certainly do not cover all ecological niches.

The data do, however, cover a bread spectrum of longevities, sizes and

fecundities.

The data presented in Table 1 are reported directly from life

history studies in the published literature or indirectly fror.i published

corapilaitons of life history studies (care was taken not to duplicate

data where this effort had access to both). The life history attributes

presented are in years for longevity, grams for maximum weight attained

and number of eggs per female for maximum fecundity. The data vere

reported directly from life tables, age-growth tables and reproduction

data tables or they were calculated from relationships presented in the

studies such as length-veight relationships and by expanding eggs per

unit weight of female by maxiinum weight attained by females.

                            Acknowledgenents

This work was conducted under a cooperative agreement between Utah

State University and the United States Environmental Protection Agency

(EPA # CR811646-01-0). Thanks is extended to the staff of the Environ-

mental Research Laboratory-Duluth who were free uith their services and

their much appreciated advice.
