EP!
THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTOR!
EP is a desert tortoise. He has been adopted as the mascot of the
Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory - Las Vegas.
One motto the United States Environmental Protection Agency uses
in its effort to face environmental threats is:
"Think Globally... Act Locally"
How better to depict that motto?
Globally, EP's shell is symbolic of the Earth. His shell plates repre-
sent the continents and how they are interrelated.
Locally, EP is an endangered species and he depicts how fragile our
environment really is.
EP may be methodical, but he always wins the race! He will succeed
in meeting the environmental challenges confronting him.

a number of trees. Trees help clean the air. You can help EP by planting water

EP takes care of EMSL-LV's greenhouse where he studies the effects of
pollution on plants.
-------
EP takes plenty of water samples to make sure that it is safe to drink. We must
all work towards a clean environment.
-------
EP does plenty of research to develop better ways to assess risks to people
and the Earth's ecosystems.
-------
EP maintains our Community Monitoring Stations. You can visit any one of the
18 stations throughout Nevada and parts of California and Utah. The visual
readouts displayed allow local residents to observe natural and man-made
radiation exposure level measurements.
-------
EP helps us monitor for radiation around the Nevada Test Site during nuclear
test periods.
-------
EP checks contaminated sites to identify threats to human health and the
environment.
-------
EP is very concerned about air pollution. He knows that air pollution is one of
the greatest threats to human health and the environment.
-------
EP works in space. He knows that pollution does not stop at international
or political boundaries.
-------
EP is helping us make better use of information about the environment by
making environmental maps on computers. EP uses this computerized infor-
mation to study complex relationships between the health of the environment
and all of the different factors that have an impact on the Earth.
-------
EP is saddened by the many oil spills that occur each year throughout the world,
He knows how important it is that ways be found to stop these spills from hap-
pening. In the meantime, EP spends a lot of time learning how to clean up the
mess without harming the environment.

Always study real hard in school! You will learn of many ways that you can
help EP protect the environment.
-------
Did you know that riding your bike helps EP? Riding your bike instead of
riding in an automobile reduces air pollution and saves precious fossil fuels
which can never be replaced.
-------
EP needs your help in recycling. Do not throw away things like glass soda pop
bottles, aluminum soft drink cans, newspapers, and plastic products. Instead
collect them and take them to a place that will recycle them. This will help con-
serve resources and energy.
-------
Littering is a very bad thing to do! You can really help EP by asking your friends
not to litter and by picking up trash whenever you find any.
-------
Water is a very valuable and limited resource in the southwest. We know how
important it is not to waste water. You can help EP by planting only water con-
serving trees and plants around your home. Grass may be pretty, but in desert
communities it's a serious water consumer.
-------
You can help EP by asking your parents to car pool to work. This will help cut
down on air pollution and conserve energy.
-------
EP knows how important it is that we all work together. The Earth is a single
integrated ecosystem shared by all people living on it.
