INTRODUCTION

The Library of the Environmental Research Center-Cincinnati
is the scientific and technical information focal point for the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As such, it provides tech-
nical information backing to all EPA libraries and all EPA scien-
tists, engineers, and researchers.

Traditional library services have been integrated with new
automated services in order to meet the agency's information
needs rapidly and efficiently. One of these automated services
is using computer databases for literature searching.

Online computer literature searching has been offered at
the Cincinnati Library since 1972, when this type of searching
first became available nationally. It permits rapid access to
millions of bibliographic citations and has proved to be cost
effective in terms of both man-hours and dollars. Most of the
literature written on a topic within the past 5 to 10 years
can be identified in a matter of minutes.

The purpose of this publication is to explain the online
searching services available at the Cincinnati Library, to out-
line the procedure for requesting a literature search, and to
provide brief descriptions of the available databases.

This publication is the second edition of Computer Litera-
ture Searching and Databases and completely revises and updates
the 1976 edition. The change in title to Online Literature
Searching and Databases reflects the fact that almost all of the
searching is now done online. Database information is current
as of September 1978. Between 1976 and 1978 the number of data-
bases available to the Cincinnati Library has grown from 74 to
124, representing a current total of more than 30 million bib-
liographic citations or records.
SEARCHING SERVICES

Literature searches are performed in response to specific
requests from EPA personnel. They may be either retrospective
or SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information).

In a retrospective search all of the years available in
the database are searched. The information in most databases
covers the last 5 to 10 years, a matter which is determined by
the database producer and/or vendor. The searchable years for
each database are specified in descriptions of the individual
files.

-------
In SDI or current awareness searching a search strategy
or profile is run only in the most recent update of a data-
base. Monthly SDI service is provided on request for those who
wish to receive the most current information on a topic automa-
tically.

Searches are performed online at a computer terminal, which
permits instant viewing of results. Search analysts are refer-
ence librarians with expertise in scientific and technical liter-
ature, as well as in the operation of computer systems.

Using Boolean logic, the searcher combines terms appropi-
ate to the subject being searched.

COMPUTER PRINTS

Computer prints are custom-made bibliographies or lists of
citations on a search topic. A limited number of citations can
be provided immediately at the terminal. Offline prints are or-
dered when a search produces a large number of citations. These
are printed at the computer location on the evening of the same
day, and are usually delivered within three working days. Prints
are sent directly to the requester, whenever possible.

All databases citations include author, title, and source
of the material. In addition, some include abstracts or sum-
maries, index terms, author's address, language, and other
types of data. Since database producers determine the items to
be included, the appearance of printed citations from different
databases varies widely.

Documents corresponding to the items on computer prints can
be supplied at the requester's local library, either from the
collection on-site of through interlibrary loan.

HOW TO REQUEST A LITERATURE SEARCH

The search topic should be described in a few sentences on
a "Literature Search Request" form (EPA Form 2170-1, rev. 9-76),
which is available in all EPA libraries. It is helpful to in-
clude a list of the most important keywords and phrases in ad-
dition to the titles and authors of several relevant papers.

Databases may be suggested, but this is not necessary. The
search analyst will use as many as apply to the subject.

Locations other than Cincinnati. Those desiring literature
searches may contact the local EPA librarian, who can provide
request forms as well as assistance in stating the request. The
librarian will send the request to the Cincinnati Library and will
receive the prints when the search is completed.

-------
A search analyst will contact the requester to discuss search
strategy and terms. The requester may also be called while the
search is in progress. This allows the requester to participate
in the interactive process and suggest changes. If there are
any questions concerning searches, call 513/684-7701.

Cincinnati. Requester may call the library, ext. 7701, for
an appointment. Search strategy will be discussed and at least
one database will be searched while the requester is present.
The allows live interaction with the computer and the opportu-
nity to review citations. Computer literature searching ser-
vices through the Cincinnati Library are available to EPA per-
sonnel only.
COSTS

Search costs vary, depending on the complexity of the re-
quest and the fees for the database used. An average cost of
$17.00 has been determined for each database searched. This
includes computer connect time and offline print charges.
Most searches require the use of 3 or 4 databases. The ERC-
Cincinnati Library absorbs the search costs.
DATABASES

Databases used by the ERC-Cincinnati Library are primarily
scientific and technical files whose material can support the
multiple facets of EPA's mission—environmental research and
development relevant to setting standards for pollution con-
trol and enforcing these standards within the framework of anti-
pollution legislation.

Many of these databases correspond to specific abstracting
and/or indexing publications. Some databases include abstracts
and others do not. Information as to a database corresponding
with a printed product and whether abstracts are included in
the computer version is part of individual database descriptions.

Types of material indexed in most databases are: scientific
and technical journal articles, government reports, conference
and symposia proceedings, dissertations, patents, books, and re-
search projects.

These databases are available to the ERC-Cincinnati Library
through contractual agreements wi'th commercial database vendors
and interagency agreements with government organizations, making
more than 120 databases searchable.

Tables on the following pages provide brief descriptions of
the individual databases. In the first column of the database
tables abbreviations are used for vendor names as follows:
