Introduction
Since 1970 when the U.S. Environ-
mental Protection Agency (JEPAJ was
given the responsibility of regulating
all aspects of pesticides, the Agency|has
amassed through the registration proc-
ess an extensive computer data system
on most Federally registered pesticide
productsJfffihe information includes
producFnames, manufacturers, active
ingredients, tolerance for residues, and
site and pest information for particular
products and active chemical ingredi-
entsW7
"Fife field of pesticide use and regula-
tion is a dynamic area. The develop-
ment of new pesticides, pest resistance
problems, and EPA's restriction of the
use of certain pesticides requires the
pesticide community to keep abreast of
what pesticides are available, and
which registered pesticide products con-
tain any given pesticidal chemical.
The Technical Services Division of the
Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) of
EPA, recognizing the need to make this
vast store of information available to
interested individuals in the pesticide
community, has developed this Pesti-
cide Product Information on Micro-
fiche. It is a data system designed to
assist individuals to answer a wide
range of pesticide related questions,
and to permit the pesticide community
to make use of most of OPP's com-
puter-based information.
This manual, and the videotape presen-
tation which was designed to reinforce
it, provides the basic information and
guidance needed to use these micro-
fiche to your advantage. Using them
can save time and money in answering
most pesticide related questions.
Some problems, however, may be
too complex to answer within a reason-
able period of time using only the
microfiche cards. If you run into such
a problem, there are experts available
to help you in the Technical Services

Microfiche—Why?
Microfiche were selected for informa-
tion dispersal because fiche are com-
pact, lightweight, inexpensive and easi-
ly updated. The microfiche are strips of
film about the size of a large index
card. Each microfiche card contains re-
duced images of up to 270 full size
computer pages.
The pesticide product information con-
sists of 153 individual microfiche
"cards". Stacked together these cards
are 1V4 inches high and weigh only a
few ounces. The same microfiche trans-
lated into "hard copy" would produce
a stack of full size computer paper over
12 feet high, weighing well over 300
pounds.

Suggested Methods For Handling
And Storage Of Microfiche
For easy use, microfiche should be
stored in a card file with suitable index
tabs w in one of the commercially
availaOTe microfiche folders.

Each fiche bears a title and number at
the top of the fiche. Sets containing
large numbers of fiche (e.g. Pesticide
Label Data, ] Site/Pest/Registration
Number, etc.) also indicate which seg-
ment of the data is contained on each
fiche. For example, the Site/Pest/Reg-
istration Number fiche for insecticides
are titled as follows:

Microfiche Readers-
Use and Availability
To use the-raicrofiche, simply select the
card you need (see Index to Microfiche
Sets) and insert the fiche into the
microfiche reader. As most readers are
somewhat different, read the directions
to determine how to insert the fiche.
As noted earlier, each frame on the
microfiche is simply a reduced com-
puter page. Each page or frame is num-
bered in the upper right hand corner
of the frame and all frames on all fiche
are sequenced identically. The first
frame is in the upper left hand corner
and the frames run sequentially from
top to bottom and left to right. After
locating the correct frame and taking
all necessary notations, remove the
fiche and return it to its proper place.
A wide variety of microfiche readers is
available. Readers vary from pocket
types to large desk models with variable
magnification. Microfiche reader-print-
ers which will provide a printed page
or "hard copy" of the data are also
available.
Most libraries have microfiche readers
or rpaHpr-printers available for
use. If you are interested in purchasj

Accuracy and Completeness of Information
The pesticide product information on
microfiche does not constitute a legal
document. The data in these microfiche
should not be used as the final word
when determining if a particular chem-
ical is registered for a particular use,
etc. Information should be for refer-
ence purposes only. Any and all data
should be verified with the source docu-
ment (e.g. the registered label, etc.)
before any substantive action is taken.
The following indicates how complete
each of the microfiche sets are. Work
on additional information is still under-

Updates and Future Fiche Sets
The microfiche data will be updated
quarterly. A new microfiche set con-
taining Site/Pest/Chemical/Registra-
tion Number will be made available
shortly, which will eliminate the need
for comparing the Chemical/Registra-
tion Number fiche set with the Site/
Pest/Registration Number set when
locating a product with a particular
Site-Pest-Chemical combination.
OPP is currently microfilming all of
the accepted pesticide labels in its files
and microfilm copies of these labels
will be distributed in the fall of 1976.
Relationships to the EPA Compendium
Of Registered Pesticides
Another important source of pesticide
related information is the "EPA Com-
pendium Of Registered Pesticides"
which is published in five volumes, by
pesticide type:
Volume 1 Herbicides & Plant Regu-
lators
Volume 2 Fungicides & Nematicides
Volume 3 Insecticides, Acaracides,
Molluscicides & Antifouling Organisms
Volume 4 Rodenticides, Bird, Fish
& Mammal Toxicants
Volume 5 Disinfectants
» Volumes 1-4 are an analysis of regis-
tered pesticides on a chemical-by-
chemical basis. Volume 5 is an analysis
of registered disinfectant products on a
site basis. The compendium indicates
the site, pest, dosage or dosage range
for each site-pest combination, the
form of the pesticide (e.g. dust vs.
wettable powder;),\tolerance for resi-
dues, preharvest intervals, use limita-
tions, etc. No reference is made to
individual products.

description of the information con-
tained in each of these microfiche sets.
Included is the manner in which the
set is organized and what is to be found
on a representative frame within the
set.
Once you are familiar with the infor-
mation contained in the system, you
will see how various sets can be com-
bined to lead to the answer needed.

The Product Manager (PM) is the in-
dividual within the Registration Divi-
sion of OPP responsible for controlling
pesticide products on a day-to-day
basis. If specific questions arise con-
cerning a particular pesticide product,
the Product Manager for that product
should be contacteS:
The Product Manager for a particnitw-
product is identified in the PM Assign-
ment microfiche. This fiche set is ar-
ranged by registration number. First
find the registration number of the
product then note the appropriate PM
number.

code, and registration date of each pest-
icide product according to its registra-
tion number.
Products currently registered in indi-
vidual States are included and can be
identified by the two-letter State desig-
nation next to the status code. State
registered products can be used only in
that State until such time as they may
be registered by EPA.
Note: the EPA registration number is
composed of two sets of digits; the
six digit company number to the left
and the five digit product number to
the right. All Shell products begin with
000201.

cides)
It should be noted that
although the majority
of the data within
Pest/Chemical (insec-
ticides) deals with in-
secticides, data on
herbicides or fungi-
cides etc. may be
found in the Pest/
Chemical (insecti-
cides). This mixing of
pesticide types is, to
some extent, the result
of data collected from
products which are
mixtures of two or
more pesticide types,
e.g. a product which
contains a fungicide
and an insecticide.
Therefore, if the user
cannot locate a partic-
ular insecticide use in
the insecticide fiche, a
review of data in the
herbicide or fungicide
fiche etc., may prcve
helpful. Note: use data
on disinfectants is re-
stricted to the Site/
Pest / Registration
