EPA
and Egypt

Nearly a dozen environmental projects are being sup-
ported by EPA in Egypt under the Scientific Activities
Overseas Program. Since 1973, more than $7.7 million
in U.S.-owned Egyptian currency has been obligated to
help Egypt solve many of its environmental problems.
This currency has been acquired chiefly from the sale of
 surplus American agricultural products.
Major projects under way in Egypt include:

 • A study of the impact of the Aswan Dam on
hydrology, water quality, aquatic ecology, public
health, agriculture, and the Egyptian society. The
results are expected to be useful in the management of
 the Nile River.

 • Analysis of desert ecosystems to improve land
management and production of food, fiber, and
minerals. Sixteen staff members from five Egyptian uni-
versities, aided by 40 research scientists, are involved.

 • A study of the potential for water recycling and reuse
at a poultry processing plant in Alexandria.

 • Monitoring and analysis of pesticides.

 • Analysis of illnesses associated with swimming at
polluted beaches in Alexandria. The results will help in
the design of a new sewage treatment plant and will
 help set water quality standards.

 • Examination of the effects of radiation from
 phosphate mining and processing.

 • Analysis of the effect of pollution on marine life in
saline water and on the ecology of reefs.

An article discussing these, and other projects in
Egypt is available from the Office of International Ac-
tivities at EPA.
