EPA and
the  Committee on the
Challenges of Modern Society
The Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society
was established within the framework  of the North
Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1969. CCMS is an infor-
mal, nondefense-oriented mechanism that encourages
voluntary participation to NATO members and other na-
tions in commonly agreed upon international projects.
The projects generally focus on technical solutions to
practical problems and on exchange of information.
EPA Administrator Douglas M. Costle has been desig-
nated by the President as the U.S. Representative to the
Committee. A plenary meeting of the  Committee is
scheduled for Washington in October, 1979 to mark the
10th anniversary of CCMS.
  EPA is the lead agency for four current pilot studies
dealing with environmental problems: flue gas desulfuri-
zation,  drinking  water, estuarine management,  and
plastic wastes recovery. EPA is participating in studies
of air pollution assessment methods and modeling, and
of hazardous waste  disposal. Both are led  by the
Federal  Republic  of  Germany.  EPA  laboratories
cooperating in a study of  remote sensing of marine
pollution, led by France, and a study aimed at preserva-
tion of historical monuments, led by Greece.
