The Study
At the request of the U.S.E.P.A. Region I ’s Construction Grants Branch,
a flushing study and sampling survey were performed by the Surveillance and
Analysis Division June 9 -12, 1980. The purpose of this project was to
collect data to be used in determining the time required for a contaminant
introduced in Fort Hill Brook to pass through Mumford Cove and exit in Long
Island Sound.
The project entailed a dye dump at 1320 on ! bnday, June 9, 1980, during
low tide at the outfall of the Groton Town Was tewater Treatment Plant. The
dye was monitored in Mumford Cove during all high and low tides beginning at
1900 on June 9 and ending at 1624 on June 12, 1980. The low tide run at 0207
on June 10, 1980 was aborted due to inclement weather.
Fluorometric data was tabulated and graphed using actual concentration
values and calculated center of mass values.
It was desireable to collect background data from Fort Hill Brook, Long
Island Sound and the Thames River as well as Muinford Cove. Samples were
collected from twelve locations both by boat and from shore according to a
pra-determined schedule from June 10 to June 12, 1980. The sample run of 0942
on June 12 was aborted due to mechanical failure.
Collected samples were analyzed at NERL and in the field for the following
parameters: temperature, pH, salinity, conductivity, chlorophyll a, pheophytin
a, BOD 5 , TSS, NH 3 , N0 2 + 3 and T-P. Mechanical failure prevented the collection
of dissolved oxygen data.
Samples collected for total coliforms were transferred to Connecticut
state personnel for analysis by their microbiologists.
Flow data from Fort Hill Brook was collected from 1500 on June 9 to 1200
on June 12, 1980.
