Environmental Protection Agency welcomes you to its Visitors Center in Wash- ington, D. C. The Center offers you an opportunity to: learn what the Federal government, through EPA, is doing to protect and to restore the environment, and to discover how you—as an individual or as a member of a group-can join in the effort to clean up the environment. EPA is a Federal regulatory agency established December 2, 1970. This action brought to- gether, for the first time in a single agency, the major environ- mental control programs of the Federal government. EPA was directed to mount an integrated, coordinated attack on environmental problems-air and water pollution control, management of solid waste, control of noise, and protection against radiation and abuses in pesticide use. EPA is responsible for establish- ing and enforcing standards called for in the various pollution control laws passed by Congress to carry out its authorities. EPA cooperates with each of the 50 States to identify and solve pollution problems. EPA works through ten Regional Offices and is supported by four National Environmental Research Centers and nearly three dozen satellite laboratories. EPA's total role is expressed by Administrator Russell E. Train: "EPA has a clear mandate to carry out the environmental statutes enacted by Congress In addition, I believe that EPA has a broader responsibility to help define, articulate and give leadership to the environmental aspirations of our society." ------- t/F OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS (A-107) U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY WASHINGTON, D.C. 20460 POSTAGE AND FEES PAID ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY EPA-335 THIRD CLASS BULK RATE It9s your world.
