INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this guide is to tell the user the depth to which
information is indexed for entry into the Solid Waste Information Retrieval
System (SWIRS) information bank, and to give him the tools for proper
utilization of this bank.
The guide is arranged in three sections. The first is a glossary
that shows how certain terms are used in this particular information
system. These definitions will not necessarily be found in the same
form in other glossaries or lexicons since they relate specifically to
this information bank.
The second section is a formal thesaurus of the actual keywords by
which abstracts are indexed for input to the SWIRS information bank. This
is a simple alphabetical listing rather than hierarchial. With each key-
word is shown its identifying numerical code, which is used in developing
search strategies, and by means of which the full information bank is
searched for the information the user requires. The thesaurus is reviewed
annually, and revisions will be published as appropriate.
In the third section are "use" terms. This section lists terms that
are not SWIRS keywords, and refers the user to the corresponding keywords
that should be used either for indexing or for developing search strategies.
For example, the term "abate" is not in the formal thesaurus, but by con-
sulting the Use Terms section, the user will be instructed to use "control,"
which is a keyword. Judicious selection of keywords will ensure that the
information retrieved by the search is most responsive to the user's needs.

DEFINITIONS
AGRICULTURE
Animal wastes and crop residues produced in farm, dairy,
or livestock and poultry-raising operations.
AIR
Apply Pollution when the document deals with generaliza-
tions or the physical aspects of polluting.
Apply Quality when the document deals with standards and
testing, definitive studies, etc.
ALLEY (COLLECTION)
Collection of solid waste placed adjacent to one or both
sides of the alley.
AREA (LANDFILL METHOD)
A method of operating a landfill whereby solid waste is
spread and compacted on the ground surface or upon a previous
lift rather than in an excavation . Cover material, obtained
from somewhere other than the working area, is spread and
compacted over the exposed waste.
BOND
Financial or chemical bonds.
BULKY WASTES
Items of solid waste that due to their large size are
not or cannot be handled by the general collection service,
i.e., appliances, other whitegoods, furniture, etc.

BURNER
A device of simple construction used for volume
reduction of refuse by burning. Device for the introduction
of a flame to an incinerator furnace by delivering fuel and
its combustion air, at desired velocities and turbulence, to
establish and maintain proper ignition and combustion of the
fuel.
CAN-FOOD
Beverage containers may be included within the scope
of this term.

CHARGING
Introduction of solid waste to the furnace (at one time,
as in a batch incinerator).
CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS
Break down the compounds into basic elements. For
example, calcium sulfate would be indexed with both Calcium
and Sulfur.

CHIP (CHIPPER)
A size reduction technique relying primarily on the
shearing, cutting, or chipping action produced by sharp-edged
blades attached to a rotating shaft (mandrel) which shave or
chip off pieces ot the object. Chippers are often used on
tree branches or brush. Chip could also refer to wood chip(s),
CLINKER
Hard fused pieces of residue formed in the fire by
agglomeration of ash, metals, glass and ceramics.
COATING
Packaging material problems or specifically, coating
bales of refuse with tar, and/or other agents.
COLLECTION
The three types of collection categorized in this
system are: municipal collection, contract collection, and
private collection. Apply both Collection and other appro-
priate descriptor.
COMMERCIAL (SOLID WASTE)
Commercial solid wastes are those generated by stores,
offices, shopping centers and other activities not responsible
for the production of a product. See also Domestic or
Institution or Industry.
COMMUNITY
Apply only in conjunction with Special to indicate
Indian reservations, communes, ghetto areas and similar areas.
COMPACT
An agreement or arrangement. Do not confuse with
compaction.

CONSTRUCTION (WASTE)
Waste materials resulting from construction, remodeling,
and repair of houses, commercial building, pavements, and other
structures. See also Demolition.
CONTRACT
The collection or disposal of solid wastes in which
cities engage companies under formal agreements and definite
specifications to handle municipal refuse, for which the
contractors are paid from general public revenues or service
fees collected by the city. See also Private.
COUNTY
Apply terms County and the name of the state; do not
apply the name of the county as an index term.
For example: document deals with Prince George's
County, Md. Index terms would be County and Maryland.
CRITERIA
Tests or rules for measuring the excellence, fitness, or
correctness of something.
CURB (COLLECTION)
Collection of solid waste placed adjacent to the curb.
CYCLONE
A collector in which the velocity of an inlet gas stream
is transformed into a confined vortex from which centrifugal
forces tend to drive suspended particles to the wall of the
cyclone; a climatic disturbance; a cyclone separator.
DATA
Statistics, charts, and other materials which are
number-oriented.

DECOMPOSE
Apply the appropriate modifying term such as chemical,
biological or thermal.
DEMOLITION (WASTE)
Waste materials and rubble resulting from demolition of
houses, commercial buildings, pavements, and other structures.
DETACHABLE CONTAINER
A large metal container that can be pulled of lifted
onto a truck and hauled to a disposal site for emptying or
that can be mechanically emptied into a special solid waste
collection truck.
DISASTER
Cyclones, hurricanes, tornados, and similar climatic
disturbances.
DISEASE
See also Bacteria, Fungus, and Virus.
DOMESTIC (SOLID WASTE)
All solid waste which originates in single- or multiple-
unit dwellings.
DUMPING
An indiscriminate method of disposing of solid waste
(on land) in a manner which does not safeguard against environ-
mental pollution.
ENERGY
Treatment by high-energy means, such as atomic and/or
nuclear disposal, fusion torch as device for disposal, etc.
Not to be confused with Radiation.

FECES
Human waste matter.
FENCE
Control measure at sanitary landfill, junkyard, etc.
FERTILIZER
Any material put on or in the soil to improve the
quality or quantity of plant growth such as manure or chemicals
This term includes compost only when the compost is combined
with additives of some sort.
FLUIDIZED BED (TECHNIQUE)
A combustion process based on the heat transfer from
finely divided particles, such as sand, to combustible material
in the combustion chamber. The materials in the chamber are
supported and fluidized by a column of upward-moving air.

FLY ASH
All solids including ash, charred paper, cinders, dust,
soot, or other partially incinerated matter, carried in the
gas stream.
FOLIAGE
Leaves, branches, clippings, grass cuttings.
FREEZING
Primarily a method of sludge dewatering/drying.
FURNACE
The chamber of an incinerator into which the refuse
is charged, dried, ignited, and burned.
GENERATION
Biological production, i.e., fly generation. Do not
confuse with__Pr_oduce_.
HAZARDOUS
Those wastes which can cause serious injury, disease,
or property damage, i.e., explosives, pathological wastes,
toxic chemicals, etc.
HEATING VALUE
The British Thermal Units (Btu) liberated per pound of
solid waste when burned completely; the products of combustion
are cooled to the initial temperature.
HYDROLYSIS
A chemical reaction in which a compound reacts with the
ions of water to produce a weak acid, a weak base, or both;
includes but is not limited to a means of utilizing wood wastes
and agricultural residues.

ILLUSTRATIONS
Schematic designs, photographs, maps, and other
materials which are picture-oriented.
INDUSTRY (SOLID WASTE)
All solid wastes or the treatment of such wastes
resulting from industrial and manufacturing operations such
as factories, processing plants, repair and cleaning estab-
lishments, refineries, and rendering plants.
INSTITUTION (SOLID WASTE)
Solid wastes originating from schools, hospitals,
research facilities, and other institutions.
JUNK
A collection of secondary materials such as scrap
metal, rope, rags, etc., possibly sorted but unprocessed.
LAGOONS
Treatment process in which algae provide oxygen;
process can be aerobic or anaerobic.
LANTZ
A destructive distillation process in which the
combustible components of solid waste are converted to
combustible gas, charcoal, and a variety of distillates.
LAW
Municipal, state, county or Federal act, bill, by-
law, or ordinance.

LEACH (LEACHATE)
Liquid that emanates from a land disposal cell and
contains dissolved, suspended and/or microbial contaminants
from the solid waste. Also refers to processes in which
mineral or metallic content is dissolved and washed away.
LEGAL
Court-actions; i.e., lawsuits, court-initiated
fines, etc.
LIGHT
Apply only when indexing items which discuss the
degradation of waste materials (plastic, for example), by
artificial rays or sunlight.
LINER
Refractory liners in incinerators; container liners;
or liners used to prevent water pollution in sanitary landfill
operation.
LITTER
A variety of material ranging from paper to pieces of
furniture discarded along public highways and in public
places; also, poultry litter. Does not apply to abandoned
automobiles.
MANAGEMENT
Apply when indexing items which discuss the overall
operation (i.e., all aspects) of a disposal/handling method or
system. Apply when item discusses more than one method or sys-
tem, such as composting, incineration and sanitary landfilling,

MATHEMATICAL MODEL
Representation of a process, device or concept
utilizing the science of numbers and their operations, inter-
relations, combinations, generalizations, abstractions and of
space configurations and their structure.
MECHANICAL
Machinelike; produced or operated by machinery or a
mechanism. Apply term describing specific application
involved: separation, transport, engineering.
MESOPHILL
See also Thermophil and Psychrophil, all of which
relate to temperatures at which organisms thrive.
MICROORGANISM
Living things microscopic in size, such as bacteria,
actinomycetes, plankton, yeasts, simple fungi, some algae,
rickettsiae, spirochaetes, slime molds, protozoans, and some
of the simpler multicellular organisms. Some produce disease
in man, animals, or plants; some are involved in stabilization
of solid waste (composting) and sewage.
MIDDLE EAST
Apply to countries listed below and others in this
geographical area:

MOISTURE CONTENT (MOISTURE HOLDING CAPACITY)
The weight loss on drying a sample of solid waste to
constant weight at a temperature of 100-105 C; also that
quantity of water held by solid waste.

MUNICIPALITY
Apply when specific city is integral part of document;
also apply state name. Do not apply the name of the city
itself except where it appears in the existing Thesaurus.
Example: San Francisco.
NEWSPRINT
Newspapers, newsletters, etc., as distinguished from
general paper products. Apply both Paper and Newsprint on
such documents.
NON-COMBUSTIBLE
Any refuse material that cannot be burned at ordinary
incinerator temperatures (1300 F to 2000 F).
NON-FERROUS
Apply both Metal and Non-ferrous when applicable.
OFFAL
The entrails, etc., of a butchered animal; slaughter-
house waste.
OPEN
Open dumps; open pit incinerators; open containers;
open burning.
PERCOLATE
A qualitative term referring to the downward movement
of water through soil.
Negative log of hydrogen ion concentration.

PILOT PLANT
Apply terms applicable to the specific situation. If a
pilot plant is evaluating the feasibility of combined refuse-
sludge composting for a municipality, then apply the terms
Combined, Refuse, Sludge, Composting, and Municipality.
PRIVATE
The collection or disposal of solid wastes for which
citizens or firms, individually or in limited groups, pay
collectors or private operating agencies. Does not include
municipally-funded collection or disposal systems.
PRODUCE
Non-biological production, i.e., electrical energy
produced or developed as the result of refuse incineration.
PROPERTY
Real estate; land values; property control by zoning
leases or other similar actions.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
Public information and education programs; pollution
prevention/cleanup campaigns; projecting or clarifying the
image of sanitation personnel; psychological effects of
existing or proposed soled waste-handling facilities upon
residents.
PURIFICATION
Water treatment, liquid sewage treatment, and similar
processes.

PYROLYSIS
The process of chemically decomposing a substance by
heating it in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere. High heat is
usually applied to the material in a closed chamber, evapo-
rating all moisture and breaking down materials into various
hydrocarbon gases and carbon-like residue. See also
Distillation.
RADIATION
Treatment by radiation, such as ultra-violet rays,
irradiation, etc. Does not refer to disposal of radioactive
wastes.
RAILROAD CAR
The management of railroad cars and parts thereof.
RAMP (LANDFILL METHOD)
An area method of operating a landfill whereby cover
material is obtained by excavating in front of the working
face. See also Area Landfill Method.
RECREATION AREA
Apply in relation to solid waste management in beaches,
parks, sports facilities and zoos.
REFUSE
Apply this term only for composition of refuse in
various circumstances (i.e., general analysis, composition of
refuse handled at landfill operations, etc.), data on refuse
production, and refuse-sludge combination treatment.

SCAVENGER
One who participates in the uncontrolled picking of
materials at a dump, incinerator, or solid waste storage areas.
Colloquial - independent solid waste collector.
SEPARATOR
The actual machinery or equipment performing this
function. Separating refers to the process.
This same policy applies to terms such as Compost,
Composting (process), Incinerator, Incineration (process), etc.
SIMULATION
Prototype; original; model. The first thing or being
of its type.
SOIL CONDITIONER
Includes humus and mulch; does not include spreading
of manure, sludge or slurries on land or combining wastes with
chemical agents.
STANDARD
Model contracts, ordinances, guidelines, and similar
items require both this term and other appropriate descriptor;
i.e., Sanitary landfill and Standard. The term applies to some
measure, principle, model, etc. with which things of the same
class are compared in order to determine their quantity, value,
quality, etc.

STERILIZE
To destroy all microorganisms and their spores outside
the body by chemical or physical means. Can also be called
disinfection.
SURVEY
Location and recording of elevations, directions, etc.,
by means of instruments.
TAILINGS
Second grade or waste material separated from raw
material during screening or processing.
TRAIN
Collection system; use ONLY in this context.
TRANSPORT
Movement of solid waste from one area to another. Also
flow, dispersion, and diffusion situations, or groundwater
movement.
TRANSPORTATION TERMINAL
Subway, bus, or train station or airport.
TRENCH (LANDFILL METHOD)
A method of operating a landfill whereby a trench is
excavated specifically for placement of solid waste, and the
excavated soil is used as cover material.
UTILIZE
Actual use of product/by-product; i.e., waste heat
utilization; also refers to use of completed sanitary landfills
as parks, and other facilities.

Identify the vector, using Rodent/ Fly, or Insect.
Apply appropriate modifiers; i.e., Disease, Control, etc.
VEGETATION
Plants, i.e., vegetation being planted on completed
sanitary landfills; effect of compost on vegetation such as
shrubbery and flowers, vines, and other plant life. Does
not refer to crops.
WALL
Apply only with water-walled incinerators/incineration
WATER
Apply Pollution when the document deals with generali-
zations and/or the physical aspects of polluting.
Apply Quality when the document deals with standards
and testing, making water acceptable for use, definitive
