DESCRIPTION OF SLUDGE PROCESSING AND DISPOSAL FACILITIES:
(refer to page 3 for diagram)
Sludge is segregated between primary and secondary
treatment. Sludge from primary clarifiers is anaerobically
digested and injected as a liquid. Waste activated sludge
is aerobically digested, then passed through a DAF unit.
The thickened sludge is then dewatered on twin belt presses.
The solids are land applied. Sludge from the DAF can also
be transferred to the anaerobic digester, as was being done
on the day of sampling.

Key to Facility Analytical Results

This volume contains analytical results for the National Sewage Sludge Survey (NSSS). This key defines the
data fields that appear in this volume. The analytical results are sorted by analysis type, analyte name and
EPA sample number. Data fields appear highlighted below and a description of each data field follows in
approximate sequence from left to right, top to bottom.
HEADER FIELDS appear by Episode and Analysis Type.
EPISODE - Unique number assigned to the facility sampling visit by EPA.
AUTHORITY - Authority name.
SURVEY ID - Unique number assigned by EPA to the NSSS questionnaire for the facility.
FACILITY - Facility name, address, city, state, and zip code.
ANALYSIS TYPE - Categorization of the analytes by analytical technique utilized.
RESULTS FIELDS appear by Analyte.
Analyte - Analyte name.
CAS No. - Chemical Abstracts Service number for the analyte.
Sample No. - EPA sample number.
Cone. - The analyte concentration. If the concentration is ND the analyte was not detected above
the minimum level.
TEF Cone. - The analyte concentration adjusted by the Toxicity Equivalency Factor. This data field
is applicable only when the Analysis Type is DIOX1NS/FURANS, otherwise TEF Cone, will equal
NA
Minimum Level - The concentration below which the analyte was not detected in the sample. This
data field is applicable only when the Cone, is equal to ND. NOTE. If the concentration for a given
analyte is ND and the minimum level is NA this indicates that the sample was analyzed scmi-
quantitatively for that analyte.
DUP No. - The duplicate sample number, if applicable.
Unit - The unit of concentration for an analyte. All results are expressed on a dry weight basis.
Units used in this volume are as follows.
MG/KG - milligrams per kilogram
UG/KG - micrograms per kilogram
NG/KG - nanograms per kilogram
% - percent residue in original sample
