Grants and Awards
ACF's core function is to raise and distribute funds to the most effective conservation organizations
addressing the most critical conservation efforts in the state. Through strategic grantmaking, ACF
strengthens those organizations, protects Alaska's magnificent wild places, and supports healthy
communities.
ACF's Awards Program honors individuals and organizations that have made outstanding
contributions to Alaska conservation through leadership, the arts, education, and community
involvement. Paying tribute to such dedication and hard work is crucial—it allows their
accomplishments to be celebrated within and beyond the conservation community, and it serves to
remind tomorrow's conservation leaders that such efforts can bring about powerful and positive
change.

About the Directory
Communities across the country face a range of complex funding challenges as they
attempt to meet the demands of environmental protection. The Environmental Finance
Center (EFC) at Boise State University assists local communities in finding creative
funding solutions to support their own plans for environmental protection. As part of this
effort, the EFC provides watershed stakeholders with the funding information they need
to make decisions and protect their resource.
There is a tremendous volume of information available for funding watershed
restoration. However, finding and sorting through this information can be a daunting
task. In an effort to address this need, the EFC has created an on-line, searchable
database for watershed restoration funding. The database includes information on
funding programs available for federal, state (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska),
private, and other funding sources. Users can query the information in a variety of ways
including agency sponsor, keyword, or by a detailed search. At the end of a query, a
brief description of each matching program will be displayed. When a specific program
is selected, a detailed page of that program will be displayed and can be printed.

The Bonneville Environmental Foundation is dedicated to restoring watershed
ecosystems throughout the Pacific Northwest. Since 1999, BEF has committed over
$1.6 million to support community-based initiatives that improve water quality, restore
habitat, and bolster native salmon and trout populations.
By applying rigorous project standards and supporting only long-term and science-based
restoration initiatives, we invest our resources in projects with the greatest potential to
produce positive ecological improvements. To ensure that our investments reinforce
scientific and effective restoration strategies, BEF employs a comprehensive 10-year
Model Watershed approach that enables us to evaluate cumulative progress over time
and improve future actions based on measured results.
Eligibility
Any private person, organization, tribe, or local government, within the Pacific Northwest
(OR, ID, WA, MT), may submit a Letter of Enquiry. Funding, however, will only be
considered where applicants 1) base proposed or existing actions on sound science; 2)
exhibit strong community engagement; and 3) demonstrate a comprehensive,
watershed-scale approach.

The Brainerd Foundation
Title:
Description:
Endangered Ecosystems Grants
Endangered Ecosystems Program
The Brainerd Foundation is making a shift in our funding strategy. We invite you to read
about it.
The Endangered Ecosystems (EE) program focuses on protecting high priority intact
ecosystems within the Pacific Northwest, as well as maintaining or restoring biodiversity
in key resilient, partially-fragmented landscapes in the region. Our foundation's first
priority is the protection of landscape level core habitat areas, as well as the protection
or restoration of buffer areas and terrestrial and aquatic linkages between core reserves.
Program Objectives
The EE program seeks to expand citizen participation in the management of public
resources; enhance the capacity of the conservation community to protect those
resources; and support and defend key environmental objectives embodied in federal
and state environmental statutes, rules and regulations. The program also works to
improve collaboration among a broad range of tribal, agricultural, rural and urban
stakeholders where this approach supports the Foundation's conservation goals.

Title: City of Seattle Neighborhood Matching Funds
Description: The Neighborhood Matching Fund is a City grant program that provides cash grants to
neighborhood and community organizations for a wide variety of neighborhood-based
projects. The program was started in response to calls from neighborhood leaders to
assist them with neighborhood self-help projects.
A required component of the program is its match provision. For most projects, the
community is required to donate cash, volunteer labor or donated services or materials
at least equal in value to the cash provided by the City. The program has been used to
build new playgrounds and parks, plant street trees, restore open space and wetlands,
create public art, build traffic circles, develop plans for business districts, and much
more.

Ecological Studies Grants
The Diack Ecology Education Program was
established in 1993 by the late Dr. Arch Diack and his
family. Funds are awarded to assist "hands-on"
programs which involve Oregon children, K-12 in
regularly scheduled field based study which emphases
analytical thought, especially programs in which the
students' work has community visibility and is
connected to community interest or goals.
Grants usually do not exceed $1,500 and are awarded
for projects which study any aspect of the local
environment by taking advantage of close study
opportunities. Funds have been used for a variety of
items such as microscopes, safety glasses, soil test
kits, rock hammers, boots, field study books, cameras,
back packs, compasses, binoculars, water test kits,
specimen collection supplies, etc.
The Diack Program especially supports projects which will become part of the weekly
school program. An example would be a proposal to study a site close to the school or
to "adopt" or develop such a site. Funds ordinarily are not approved for substitute
teachers or transportation. There are no funding deadlines.

The Educational Foundation of America
Environment Grants
EFA welcomes Inquiries at any time. There are no deadlines.
Due to the volume of requests, staff is not available to determine your
qualification !n advance of your inquiry submission.
The Educational Foundation of America (EFA) makes grants to qualifying non-profit
organizations that have tax-exempt status and those that are not private foundations as
defined in the Internal Revenue Code. EFA provides grants for specific projects. It does
not provide funds for endowment or endowed faculty chairs, building/capital programs,
religious purposes, grants to individuals, annual fund-raising campaigns, indirect costs,
overhead or general support. The Foundation prefers not to fund projects located
outside the United States.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the environment, reproductive freedom,
theatre, education, medicine, drug policy reform, democracy, peace & national security
issues and human services. Important characteristics considered by EFA are an
organization's record of achievement, intended broad impact, sound financial practices,
increasing independence, and correspondence with EFA objectives. Unfortunately,
many worthy requests are denied because needs exceed the Foundation's resources or
a given project does not fall within a current area of focus.

Grant Exchange
If your group is seeking funding for projects related to:
¦ Watershed Protection
¦ Habitat Restoration
¦ Reforestation
¦ Salmon Conservation
¦ Natural Resource Stewardship
you are in the right place!
The Grant Exchange is a clearinghouse of grant and technical assistance programs offered
by the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks with the goals of protecting
and enhancing the environment, increasing community stewardship, and providing expertise
aind consultation to projects.
Grants and technical support are an important way in which King County increases
opportunities for community stewardship of natural resources. These funds go a long way by
developing and strengthening partnerships with community organizations and local
governments. On average, every dollar invested through grants is matched by three dollars
in cash and in-kind contributions. This leverage makes projects possible that couldn't be
done alone.

Description:
Wildlife and Habitat Preservation Grants
What We Believe
As development pressures increase, the stewardship of
vital ecosystems is critical for protecting species,
populations and habitats. The need exists to preserve
land, through acquisition, easements and other
conservation approaches. Applied science and research
are important tools for preserving, protecting, and
restoring all forms of wildlife and habitat, as is
understanding the complexity and interdependence of all
life. The concept of sustainability recognizes that
environment, economics and equity must be considered
together in order to protect the quality of life at every
level.
What We Support
• Only those organizations whose missions are dedicated to preservation, protection or
perpetuation of wildlife and/or habitat.
• Protecting habitat sites and wildlife corridors whose conservation value is based on
scientific assessment.
Our Current focus
• Projects that are part of an established strategy or design.
• Collaborative efforts that involve other organizations, funders, non-profits and
agencies that are similarly dedicated to our mission.

Title: Five-Star Restoration Matching Grants Program
Description:
WW *j$SrW
What is the Five Star Restoration Grant Program?
The Five Star Restoration Program brings together students, conservation corps, other
youth groups, citizen groups, corporations, landowners and government agencies to
provide environmental education and training through projects that restore wetlands and
streams. The program provides challenge grants, technical support and opportunities
for information exchange to enable community-based restoration projects. Funding
levels are modest, from $5,000 to $20,000, with $10,000 as the average amount
awarded per project. However, when combined with the contributions of partners,
projects that make a meaningful contribution to communities become possible. At the
completion of Five Star projects, each partnership will have experience and a
demonstrated record of accomplishment, and will be well-positioned to take on other
projects. Aggregating over time and space, these grassroots efforts will make a
significant contribution to our environmental landscape and to the understanding of the
importance of healthy wetlands and streams in our communities.
How to Apply
The Five-Star Restoration Matching Grants Program is open to any public or private
entity. Applicants should complete the attached application form, including project
narrative and budget request. Proposals for Five Star Restoration Grants are due
February 16, 2009.

Description: Provides grants requiring a non-federal cash

.(^FOUNDATION
The National Forest Foundation (NFF), a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization,
chartered by Congress, engages America in community-based and national programs
that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest
System, and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National
Forests. The NFF believes that communities should play a significant role in
determining the future of National Forests and Grasslands. By matching federal funds
provided through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Forest Service to non-federal
dollars, the NFF Matching Awards Program (MAP) is able to effectively double the
resources available to nonprofit partners to implement projects that directly benefit our
National Forests and Grasslands.
A common thread connecting the NFF program areas is an interest in action-oriented
projects that enhance the viability of natural resources while considering benefits to,
and the involvement of, surrounding communities. For the Matching Awards Program,
the NFF accepts applications from non-governmental, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations
and Native American tribes working on or adjacent to National Forests and Grasslands
throughout the United States to implement on-the-ground conservation and restoration
projects.
Who Can Apply:
Applications will be accepted from non-federal partners, community-based
organizations, Native American tribes, educational institutions, and other non-profit
501(c)(3) organizations.

Covering Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, and Alaska, the estuarine
and riverine habitats of the
Northwest Region are as diverse
as the fisheries they support.
Including coastal wetlands,
shellfish reefs, salmon streams
and streambanks, the northwest
region contains a multitude of
restoration opportunities. Since
1996, the northwest region has
supported more than 300
community restoration projects
benefiting over 1400 acres of
estuarine and riparian habitat and I
opening approximately 400 miles of in-stream salmonid habitat. NOAA has contributed
more than $8 million for restoration activities in the northwest region with partners
providing an additional $20 million in non-federal cash and in-kind match. In addition,
almost 15,000 volunteers have donated more than 150,000 hours of work.

Mini-Grant Deadlines
Knowing that teachers are incredibly busy and cannot always fit into "our deadlines," we do accept
mini-grant applications throughout the year. However, in order to budget our finances and manage oui
Foundation, we do need to have our deadlines for funding.
So....
All applications received by September 15th will be considered for first semester funding on or about
October 1 st of each school year. Those received by February 15th will be considered for our second
semester, March 1st funding.
MINI-GRANT APPLICATIONS
Pay It Forward Mini-Grants are designed to fund one-time-only service-oriented projects identified by y
as activities they would like to perform to benefit their school, neighborhood, or greater community.
Projects must contain a "pay it forward" focus - that is, they must be based on the concept of one pers<
doing a favor for others, who in turn do favors for others, with the results growing exponentially - to be
considered in the grant making process. WE DO NOT GIVE GENERAL EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOF
THE IMPROVEMENT OF YOUR SCHOOL, THE PURCHASE OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, ETC.
Grant applications are reviewed and considered by a Selection Committee throughout the year.

Altar Valley, 30 miles southwest of Tucson, represents the largest unfragmented
Sonoran Desert landscape in Pima County, Arizona, and is home to 24 species of
concern. Uncontrolled mining and grazing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
degraded the valley environment. Ranching families now living in the valley have
adopted more ecologically sound grazing practices, but are concerned about
development pressure from the sprawling Tucson metropolitan area. In 1995, 12 local
ranching families formed the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance to work towards ensuring
a sustainable future for family ranches and for species living in the valley.

The Russell Family Foundation
Environmental Sustainability Grants
The foundation is committed to improving
protection of the environment in western
Washington, with an emphasis on the waters of
Puget Sound. The foundation focuses its kuSSLLL LA.VHY hOUNDAJiON
grantmaking in this program on Puget Sound.
Environmental Education and Green
Business. For each topic of interest, the foundation has identified goals for the next five
years.
The foundation works with its grantees and others to implement strategies that raise
awareness and understanding of our environment and the importance of protecting it.
Increased understanding will in turn lead to actions—individual, corporate, governmental,
and societal—that will provide lasting and effective protection for the environment. We
believe that the environment, economics, and social equity interact with one another to
affect the achievement of these goals.
We support systemic and community-centered strategies that encourage collaboration
across sectors and, where possible, leverage other support, build partnerships and
reach new audiences. Though not a requirement for funding, we welcome projects that
effectively address and connect several of our areas of interest.
We will judge our efforts by measuring how well we reach four goals:
The water quality of Puget Sound will improve and populations of the Sound's marine
species will increase and be healthier.
The public, students and teachers, and business and community leaders in the Puget
Sound region will reflect a better understanding of water quality issues, responsible
stewardship and sustainable practices.
Consumers will increase their demand for and use of sustainable services and products.
They will reduce their consumption of services and products that are not sustainable.
Businesses will increase their use and development of sustainable products, services
and processes and reduce their use of those that are not sustainable.

2007-2009 Choose to Change
After a very successful program in 2005, Sustainable Seattle is implementing its second
Choose to Change sustainability program. Funded by a Public Participation Grant from the
Washington State Department of Ecology, the program includes a workshop designed for
Middle- and High School students in the Greater Seattle Area, as well as funding
opportunities for class projects that encourage smart consumption, waste reduction and
sustainability.
Presented in a 1 or 2 day, hour long format, the Choose to Change workshop employs
concepts from the Washington Department of Ecology "A-Way With Waste" program along
with Sustainable Seattle's "Putting Sustainability Into Action" curriculum. On Day 1 students
learn about the environmental, economic and social consequences of their consumer
decisions, especially regarding natural resources and waste. If teachers elect to participate
in Day 2, students work together to develop a plan for a class project that promotes waste
reduction and natural resource conservation.
Upon completion of the Day 2 workshop, teachers and students may apply for
funding to finance or partially finance one or more of their class project(s). Each
Post-Workshop Project is eligible to receive up to $400 and 6 hours of project
assistance from a Sustainable Seattle staff member! Alternative sustainability project
ideas may also be considered for funding.
This program is offered to schools and community groups free of charge.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Alaska Coastal Program
Title: Alaska Coastal Conservation Grants - 2009
Description: Greetings from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Coastal Conservation Program! Coastal areas in Alaska
provide critical ecological functions vitally important to
sustaining fish and wildlife populations and contribute to
the health of our local communities.
In partnership with a diverse array of organizations, Alaska's Coastal Program
implements projects in south coastal Alaska that restore and protect coastal habitats
and their fish and wildlife resources. To date, we have provided technical assistance
and matching funds for more than 150 projects, ranging from site-specific wetland,
upland, and stream habitat protection and restoration efforts to development of
watershed-scale conservation plans. These projects typically involve assessment,
restoration and protection activities on private, municipal, state, and Native lands.
USFWS contributions to projects have ranged from $1,700 to $35,000, with comparable
matching funds from project partners.
We encourage our partners to communicate directly with the Coastal Program Manager
in your area to discuss coastal habitat conservation needs and project concepts.
If a project concept is accepted by FWS program staff, we will work with you to refine
the work plan and prepare a cooperative agreement. While final 2009 funding
allocations for the Coastal Program projects in Alaska are not yet available, we
anticipate receiving a project allocation of approximately $400,000.
I am pleased to announce that David Wigglesworth has taken over my former duties as
Southcentral Alaska Coastal Program Manager in the Anchorage field office. The
Southcentral program supports projects throughout Southcentral Alaska, Kodiak,
Southwestern Alaska north to the mouth of the Yukon, and the Aleutian Islands. David's
phone number is (907) 271-3764 and his email address is

The Southeast Alaska Program staff remains the same. Neil Stichert is based in the
Juneau Fish and Wildlife Field Office and can be reached at (907) 780-1180 or

Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission
Title: WA State Parks - No Child Left Inside Grant Program
Description: An Outdoor Education and Recreation Grant Program
nam
K"v"* v
Washington's children are as "plugged in" as the
rest of the nation's children. They are spending
more time indoors, on computers, watching
television, and less time playing outside. Children
are not getting the experiences, memories and
benefits of enjoying the great outdoors that previous
generations did. Outdoor education and recreation
programs can help turn this trend around. These
programs help reduce stress of our over-scheduled
children, increase their attention spans, reduce
absenteeism, create positive behavioral changes and increase overall test scores.
Outdoor education programs help children gain the experiences and benefits of
connecting with the great outdoors.

What group is served by the outdoor education and recreation programs?
Eligible programs serve students of Washington state, preferably, youth at risk of failing
or dropping out of school, underrepresented learners, and those facing social,
behavioral, economic and health barriers.
Child Left Inside is a grant program
by the Washington State Parks and
Commission. The program has $1.5
available to Washington state outdoor
and recreation youth programs to help
get our children back outside to learn about and
enjoy nature.

Whole Systems Foundation
Title:
Description:
Whole Systems Environment I Living Sustainably Grants
Grant Proposal Guidelines
Letter of Inquiry
Whole Systems accepts a limited number of grant proposals each year. We fund
projects related to the environment and living sustainably on the Earth. We take a broad
view of the world situation, and seek to insert a small but useful financial boost where we
see that we have the most leverage for change. If you look through our past projects you
may get a sense of the diversity of projects we support. As a result is it difficult to
stipulate on paper exactly what our criteria are. Thus we encourage any group interested
in applying for a grant to submit a one page letter of inquiry before making the effort to
write a full proposal.
Project Criteria
We are seeking projects that include at least one and preferably more than one of the
following factors:
1. Address root causes of environmental degradation rather than secondary issues.
2. Facilitate increased awareness of the interdependence of human well being with the
health of the rest of the ecosystem. 3. Have the support of the local community or grass
roots organizations.
Grant Size
Grants usually range between $1,000 and $5,000.

Wilhurforce Foundation
Strategic Framework 2020
Our Vision,
By 2020, a network of protected core reserves, corridors and buffer zones across Western North
America will support ecologically effective landscapes and viable wildlife populations.
Why We're Here
Wildlife, wilderness and human communities are intricately intertwined. Natural landscapes support
a wealth of species and ecological services that sustain the quality of all life. In Western North
America, some of these landscapes have unique combinations of ecological and biological features
found nowhere else on earth.
Our Funding Region
Wilburforce Foundation uses conservation science to identify specific priority regions in which it will
fund. These regions correspond with our focus on habitat security, focal species and wildlife
linkages. Please reference the map of our funding region that shows areas in which we have a
funding interest.
For more detailed information about our work, please see our Strategic Framework.

CoMMAMiity Nature/Area#
The Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Grant Program gives small monetary grants to
schools, nature centers, or other non-profit educational organizations for the purpose of
establishing outdoor learning centers within the United States and Canada. The grant
recipient learning centers are those which most successfully reflect the Wild Ones
mission to educate and share information about the benefits of using native plants in
our landscape and to promote biodiversity and environmentally sound environmentally
sound practices. Only through this knowledge, can we appreciate humankind's proper
place in the web of life.
Established by Wild Ones in 1996, the Seeds for Education (SFE) Program honors our
"philosophical compass," Lorrie Otto. Money for the Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education
Fund grant program comes almost entirely from donations from Wild Ones members
and other benefactors. The grant program provides cash awards within the United
States and Canada primarily for child-centered projects that create native plant
landscapes or develop outdoor classrooms, but over the years we have also awarded
grants to nature centers, parks and universities.
Applications for SFE Awards
To be considered for the annual award, non-profit groups such as schools, nature
centers, houses of worship, or similar organizations must have applied by November
15th of the previous year. Please see our SFE information page to download an
application form and/or a copy of the final report form.
Funds will be provided only for the purchase of native plants and seed for the
grant award year. A project budget should show how monies are to be spent.
