By enabling PCs to control Energy Star monitors, Computer Partners can make a significant contribution towards achieving these savings. With the introduction of Windows 95, Computer Partners can now easily enable their PCs to activate the monitor power management features and preset the default times for between 15 and 30 minutes as specified in Version 2.0 of the MOU. (PC power management must still be set through the BIOS.) lb activate the monitor power management features through Windows 95, follow these simple steps: 1. Click on the "Start" icon, then "Settings," "Control Panel," "Display," and "Settings" once again. (Or right click anywhere on the "Background" and then choose "Properties.") 2. Press the "Change Display Type" button to select your monitor or choose a generic one if yours isn't listed. If the monitor is Energy Star, a check mark will appear in the box that reads "Monitor is Energy Star compliant." 3. Choose the "Screen Saver" option of the Display Properties screen. If your computer has VESA BIOS power management extensions or APM1.1, then you can select the low-power mode (e.g., 15 to 30 minutes) and shut off times (e.g., 70 minutes). If you will be shipping Energy Star PC systems with Windows 95, you may also want to do the following: • Provide users with instructions for changing the PC and monitor power management features. • Inform your customers of the energy and monetary savings they can enjoy by using the power management features. (Also, please help us educate consumers about the difference between screen savers and power management features. Understanding this difference is particularly important since the screen saver and power management options are featured on the same Display Properties screen in Windows 95.) • Educate your technical support personnel about the Windows 95 power management features for monitors, as well as the PC power management features, so they can quickly respond to customer inquiries. • Consider including an INF file with monitors sold separately so that Windows 95 will recognize the monitors as Energy Star. Partners are also encouraged to test their monitors to ensure that the power management features work properly when accessed through Windows 95. Feel free to call us if you have any Windows 95 tips to share with us! ------- Tip of the Month Soon we will be able to distribute Energy Star informational materials, such as Star Bytes, through e-mail. In The Spotlight Dell Makes It Easy to Sell Energy Star With so many different PC configur- ations available, it's not always obvious which ones are Energy Star. But Dell Computer Corporation has come up with a way to measure the individual power consumption of its components, and determine if the total power consumption of the system fits Energy Star guidelines. Dell has enhanced their order entry system (OES) to allow sales representatives to easily custom- configure Energy Star systems for customers while they are on the telephone. The OES automatically assumes that every configuration should be Energy Star and tabulates the wattages for all the computer components as they are requested. If a configuration exceeds 30 watts in sleep mode, the salesperson is alerted on the monitor screen. Depending on customer needs, the salesperson then suggests alternative ways to configure the system so that it meets the Energy Star guidelines or tells the OES that it's acceptable to exceed 30 watts. The result is that Dell has been better able to serve its energy-conscious customers and promote its Energy Star systems. From The Buyer's Side States Asked to Sign Purchasing Policy State governments collectively purchase more office equipment than the Federal Government, and this summer the Energy Star Program is encouraging them to use this purchasing power to save taxpayer dollars. Focusing on the energy- and cost-saving features of Energy Star computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, and copiers, state procurement officials were asked to calculate potential savings for their states, and then to sign a purchasing policy agreement for future procure- ment of Energy Star office equipment. Governor George Voinovich of Ohio, who has embraced the Energy Star Program for his state, is assisting Energy Star in this effort by sending a personal letter to other Governors, encouraging them to commit their states to Energy Star procurement. 2 — StarBytes July/August 1995 ------- Spreading the Word EPA is encouraging national magazines to place this public service announcement during the holiday season. Look for the Energy Star PSA An Energy Star Office Equipment public service announcement (PSA) has been sent to approximately 100 magazines that reach a wide variety of demographic audiences, including business and computer professionals, small business owners, and individual consumers. Some of the magazines that have been targeted include Time, U.S. News and World Report, Smithsonian, National Geographic, airline magazines, and computer publications. EPA is strongly encouraging magazines to place the PSA before the end of the year and during the holiday season when many retail computer purchases are made. Utilities Promote Energy Star Program EPA is working with several utilities located across the country to promote the Energy Star Program and products to their customers. In July, we visited the New York Power Authority to give an Energy Star presentation to their large office equipment buyers. Consolidated Edison, also located in New York, has agreed to include an article on the Energy Star Program in the next issue of its quarterly newsletter, which reaches millions of area residents. And on the West Coast, Southern California Edison has been successfully encouraging local companies to sign the Energy Star Purchasing Policy. These, and other utilities, are spreading the message that Energy Star equipment can conserve energy, save money and help prevent air pollution. August Expos BTA Expo. We recently returned from the Business Technology Expo in Las Vegas, and there's only one word to describe the show for us—Successful! The Energy Star booth was visited by over one hundred dealers who were interested in learning more about the Program and products. Soon we will be providing marketing tools to interested dealers to help them sell Energy Star imaging equipment. Check the next issue of Star Bytes for highlights from the Expo. FedPro Expo. While some of us went to Las Vegas, others were in Washington, D.C. to attend the FedPro Expo, a show for Federal procurement professionals. We were happy to see that many Partners displayed Energy Star materials in their booths. (Cards and fact sheets were provided to exhibiting Partners on the first day of the show.) We encourage you to use the cards and other materials at future trade shows. Call us if you would like some for your next show.
