-SEPA United States Environmental Protection Agency Air and Radiation 6202J EPA 430-N-94-010 g January/February 1995 Energy Star Computers Program EPA POLLUTION PREVENTER Star Bytes Energy Star Product Listing Goes On-Line v ' Star Bytes is a monthly newsletter from the EPA \ Energy Star Computers Program to communicate ideas and developments affecting Energy Star partners and allies and their products. We welcome your comments. Coming to a Mailbox Near You... If you missed the Energy Star Computers Confer- ence last October, don't despair. We are sending a post-conference mailing to the primary contact person at each company and to all conference attendees. Each package includes information about the Conference and Awards Ceremony and updated program information. We have held this mailing to include some document changes which have occurred since the Conference. Please be sure to substitute prior versions with the new documents. The package should arrive in the next several weeks. The next time you're surfing the Internet take a minute to check out the Energy Star Product Database. Detailed listings of compliant computers, monitors, printers and controlling devices are available on EPA's gopher server (gopher.epa.gov). Govern- ment, corporate, and private purchasers can now download complete lists and perform text searches to help them find Energy Star products. How to Access the Database The database listings can be accessed either via gopher or a graphical Internet browser such as Mosaic or Netscape. Simply point your browser towards gopher.epa.gov for gopher or http://www.epa.gov for graphical browsers. Once you're on the EPA Home Page, scroll down and click on EPA Gopher. The Energy Star Computers Product Listing is located under Consumer Information. If you are new to the Internet, here's a hint to help you get started. Most Windows-based gopher programs allow you to enter a site address by choosing New Gopher under the File menu. If you have a menu-driven gopher service provided by a Unix host, a lower-case letter "o" usually allows you to enter an address. Product Reporting Forms If partners would like to have products listed in the data- base, mail or fax product information to EPA. (Please let us know when new compliant products are introduced and when old products are taken off the market. The database is updated on the first of every month.) Revised product reporting forms (as of 11/94), along with testing guidelines, are available on the Energy Star Fax-back Line at 202-233- 9659. (Request a menu for the appropriate document numbers.) We cannot accept product information by e-mail. Encourage Your Customers to Access the 'Net Spread the word within your companies and among your customers that Energy Star product information is now available on the Internet. In addition, we encourage partners and allies who have their own Home Pages on the Internet to include Energy Star information. Please contact EPA if you are interested in using EPA-developed materials. We welcome your comments and suggestions on how we may further take advantage of marketing via Internet. ------- 000$ asn 31VAIdd HOd Al"lVN3d ssaNisna ivioiddo se-o Vd3 pie,-j see-j pue eBeisod nvw ssvno isuid 09t>02 oa 'U0)6u!MSBM (r2029) suiej60Jd J8}ndiuoQ jbis *6.10113 Aou96\/ uojpeiojd leiuawuojiAug sfl Vd3'cN Energy StarSM Logo Violations Fax-back Line Update The Energy Star Fax-back Line is being changed in order to make the system more efficient. As a result, the document numbers have been revised. Until March, you can enter the old numbers and an updated menu will be faxed to you. We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause. You should continue to dial 202-233- 9659 to reach the Fax-back Line. As the Energy Star6" logos' have grown in consumer appeal and visibility, so has the potential for their misuse. In order to maintain the integrity of the Energy Star5" logo and the program, EPA system- atically searches for and addresses logo violations. Each month major computer publications are reviewed and letters are sent to those compa- nies who either do not have authori- zation to use the logos in their advertisements (e.g., they are not partners) or are using the logos improperly. The response of these companies to the letters has been positive. Many companies have signed MOUs to join the Energy Star Program while others have made the recommended changes to their advertisements. If you are unsure of how to apply the logos, please refer to the updated logo guidelines (as of 10/94) which are available on the Energy Star Fax- back Line. To report a possible logo violation, call 202-233-9114 and we will look into it. Your call will remain confidential. ! i here are three versions of the tnergy Star logo: the partner logo, the ally logo and the international partner logo. The 100% Club We hope you all made it your New Year's resolution to join the Energy Star 100% Club in 1995! To qualify, you must convert your entire line of a given product (e.g., computers, monitors, printers or fax machines) to meet Energy Star guidelines. Please let us know when you reach this goal. (Call 202-233-9114 if you have questions.) We will then add your company name to our prestigious list of inductees. A listing of 100% Club members will be made available at an upcoming event in late March and in fiitUFe press mailings. Linda Latham, Director of the Energy Star Programs, first announced the inception of the 100% Club at the Energy Star Computers Conference last October. We would like to once again congratulate the inductees. ENERGY STAR 100% CLUB Monitors: CTX MAG lnnovision Optiquest Samsung Printers: Hewlett-Packard PCs: USA Teknik ------- |
