is an "Energy Star5" compliant

"can reduce the energy consump-

computer products." The MOU,
however, specifies that Controlling
Device partners may not state that
a product "converts" or "transforms"
a regular computer into an Energy
Star*" computer. Complete internal
power management is one
requirement for Energy Star5"
computers. EPA does not consider
a standard computer sold with a
controlling device to be an Energy
Star5" computer.

category, joining the two existing
categories of PC/Monitors and
Printers.
Controlling devices can switch off
a PC, monitor, or printer, depend-
ing on their design. However, to
display the Energy Star5" logo,
controlling devices must be
individually approved by EPA and
meet specific criteria for each
category. For example, a control-
ling device for computers can
display the Energy Star5" logo only
if it has an automatic save or
"bookmarking" feature that allows
the user to return to the exact
location when the computer
powers back up. Energy Star5"
compliant controlling devices for
monitors must have a feature to
easily change the default time after
which the monitor powers down.
All Systems Can Be

devices also can reduce energy use
for existing computers and they

30-Watt Final
Configuration
Your product can display the
Energy Star5" logo only if it is
less than 30 watts as shipped to
the consumer. EPA has discovered
that some computers displaying
the Energy Star*4 logo are not in
compliance because of add-on
cards inserted before the equip-
ment was shipped. The manufac-
turer is responsible for assuring
that systems claiming to be
Energy Star5*1 meet the terms
of the MOU. Manufacturers who
sell through resellers or system
integrators may want to specify
changes or add-ons that maintain
compliance.
Use Your Brand Name
When Reporting
Energy Star*" partners who
sell products under their own
brand names should report their
compliant products to EPA for
inclusion in the database of
qualifying products. If you OEM
your product to another company,
which then labels it with its own
brand name, that company must
join the Program in order to
display the logo and should
report its own products to EPA.
"All-in-One" Computers
and Monitors
Computers and monitors can
only be measured at a combined
60 watts if they are an "All-in-One"
system. To qualify as an "All-in-
One" system, it must be impossible
to measure the power consump-
tion of the two components
separately; the computer and
monitor must be housed in
the same casing; and the system
must be connected to the electri-
cal outlet through a single power
cable.
