&EPA United States Information Resources Environmental Protection Management Agency (3404) INTERNATIONAL UPDATE EPA/220-N-95-024 Jul/Aug 1995 UNEP Conference: Protection of the Marine Environment from Land Based Activities Between October 23 and November 3, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) will sponsor a conference on protection of the marine environment in Washington, D C at the conference facilities of the Department of State. Participants will include the governments of over 80 countries as well as international and nongovernmental organizations As the human population all over the world becomes concentrated in coastal areas, the marine environment is required to bear ever greater burdens. Marine habitats are being destroyed by the population load and the physical changes to the land which humans make. Municipal, industrial, and agricultural runoff are carried to coastal regions by rivers, ocean currents, and atmospheric deposition. Coastal pollution endangers human health and critical habitats while numerous activities undermine the sustainable use of coastal resources that form the basis for a wide range of economic activities (e.g.. tourism, fishing, recreation, etc.) that are critical to many coastal communities. Thus the purpose of the UNEP conference, once its members determine the major threats to the health of the marine environment, is to propose a plan of action to prevent further damage and provide for sustainable development in coastal regions. Once developed, the plan of action will serve as a guide to individual states for reducing the degradation of the marine environment and promoting both the conservation of marine resources and sustainable development. If you have any questions regarding this conference, please contact Doris McBride at (202) 736-4928 Other Conference Announcements Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment Between June 15 and June 20,1996, the Second International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment will be held in Newport, Rhode Island.
