Recall Data Base
The Recall Data Base is made up of three files which store
information compiled from Federal Test Procedure (FTP) tests run
on in-use vehicles (vehicles owned and operated by private
citizens). The three files are CLSDATA.DBF, VEHDATA.DBF, and
FTP_DATA.DBF, which are explained below. Testing was conducted
by the Vehicle Compliance and Programs Group (formerly the
Recall Branch) of the Vehicle Programs and Compliance Division
(formerly the Manufacturers Operations Division) of the Office of
Mobile Sources of the Office of Air and Radiation of the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency. Contact as of 7/1/99 is Carl
Wick (202) 564-9331.
FTPDATA.DBF
Contains information such as vehicle identification
information and test results directly related to testing.
INV - Investigation number. Entered as four digits (YYNN) where
YY is the fiscal year and NN is the assigned investigation
number.
SITE - Test location. (ARB - Ann Arbor, VTL - Springfield VA,
DEN - Denver CO, HTL - Houston TX).
CLASS - Identifies specific test program at each site. Assigned
in sequence at each site. Not a unique identifier unless used
with SITE.
VEH - Vehicle number (NNN) based on list of owners placed in
random order. Not unique unless used with CLASS and SITE.
TEST - TEST refers to the maintenance/testing sequence. M2
designates the test which is the test representative of the
-------
set-to-specifications condition. Ml designates the
"before adjustment test", or as arrived. Special tests are
designated sequentially by SPXX where XX is a two digit number
denoting the sequential order of the test, (e.g., the first
special would be SP01, the second SP02, etc.)
MILE - Odometer mileage at time of the test.
HC - Total hydro-carbon test results (grams/mile).
NMHC - Non-methaneal hydro-carbon test results (grams/mile).
CO - Carbon monoxide test results (grams/mile).
NOX - Nitrous oxides test results (grams/mile).
MPG - Fuel Economy (miles/gallon) test results.
MTH - Methane, composite CH4 test results (grams/mile).
SHED - Gasoline evaporative emissions test results (grams/test).
Total of DIURNAL and HOT SOAK.
PART - Diesel Particulates (grams/mile).
IHC - Idling engine hydro-carbon emissions as measured during
the maintenance on a hot engine.
ICO - Idling engine carbon monoxide emissions as measured during
the maintenance on a hot engine.
TNUM - Test Number, assigned to the individual test by the lab.
Not unique unless the site is specified.
DIUR - Evaporative emissions test results for the diurnal test.
HS - Evaporative emissions test results for the hot soak test.
TST DATA - Date of Test (MMDDYYY)
COMMENTS - Any comments related to the test.

VEHDATA.DBF
Contains vehicle information such as manufacturer and engine size.
EVFM- Evaporative emissions control family.
CID - Three digits if cubic inches, or digit-period-digit if in liters.
TTRN - Type of Transmission. The choices are AUTO (automatic
transmission), LAUT (lockup automatic), MAN (manual
transmission), MISS (missing data), MNCG (manual with creeper
gear), TWIN (twin stick, Mitsubishi).
TRAN -Transmission Speed Code. The choices are AUTO
(automatic), MAN3 (three speed manual), MAN4 (four speed
manual), MAN5 (five speed manual), MISS (missing data), and SEMI
(semiautomatic).
ILIM - Idle Mixture Adjustment Limiting Device. CM (caps
missing), CP (caps present), MISS (missing data), N/A (not
applicable, not used), PM (plugs missing), and PP (plugs
present).
AGE - Age of vehicle (months) when tested.
FSYS - Fuel system. C (carbureted), EF (multi-port electronic
fuel injection), MF (mechanical fuel injection), and TB
(throttle body injection).
ECODE - Engine Code or Calibration as assigned by the
manufacturer, determined from the certification application.
-------
BLD_DATE - Build date (MMDDYYYY)
CLSDATA.DBF
Information identifying the vehicle class.
PROG - EPA program under which the tests were run. Not usually used.
Not a unique identifier unless used
with SITE.
CTYP - CLASS TYPE is test protocol or purpose. CONF
(confirmatory), SURV (surveillance), MDSV (modified
surveillance), DATA (data gathering), HIMI (high mileage),
or SPEC (special).
CSEQ - The CLASS SEQUENCE is the class test or retest sequence.
T1 is the first test of CLASS TYPE or category, T2 is the second
test of CLASS TYPE or category, T3 is the third test of CLASS
TYPE or category, and T4 is the fourth test of CLASS TYPE or
category. If, for example, confirmatory testing was moved from
VTL to Ann Arbor because an owners list was exhausted before the
class was completed the second confirmatory class would be
sequence T2.
CDAT - Class Start Date (YYMMDD). Date of first good test.
MYR - MODEL YEAR is the last two digits in the model year of the
vehicle (e.g., 94, for a 1994MY vehicle).
MFG - The MANUFACTURER CODE is the abbreviation for the
manufacturer's name.
