MCNAMARA'S HIGHLIGHTS
o NEW NAME FOR NEWSLETTER
Starting with this issue of our library newsletter, we are changing
its name to "The Information Broker." This is to reflect the broad
range of information services that are provided by OIRM's Information
Services Branch. The services include the HQ Library, the Public
Information Center, the Public Information Reference Unit, Translations
and INFOTERRA, an international referral service. In this, and future
issues, we hope to share with you pertinent information about our
activities and services. We welcome your comments and suggestions
as to how we can be more helpful to you. Please contact Emma McNamara,
382-5922, with your ideas.
o RJBLIC INFCXMATICN CENTER (PIC)
PIC has a new manager. She is Lisa Young and previously worked as a
reference librarian in the Headquarters Library. She has been
coordinating with the PIC staff over the past six months as part of
her reference library duties and will bring that perspective to
her new job. Lisa will be delighted to help you make special
publications available to the public and is interested in hearing hew
the PIC can better assist you. You can reach her at 475-7755.
o NEW HAZARDOUS WASTE VIDEOS
The Library has just received a 7-tape series of videotapes (VHS format)
on "Handling Hazardous Waste." The series of seven tapes cover the
areas of transportation, lab packing, liquid waste, packaging, disposal
facilities and manifests. They are available on overnight loan.
Call Monique Currie, 382-5922.
o AN INVITATION TO RESEARCHERS
Have you ever wondered where to get information about environmental
issues in another country? EPA is the U.S. focal point for INFOTERRA,
a United Nations information system on the environment. It operates
in 126 countries, linking national and international institutions
on environmental decision making.
You are cordially invited to make use of the INFOTERRA network.
Contact Linda Spencer at the EPA Library. Her number is 382-5917.

QUESTION OF TOE M3NTH
Question: What is the effect of halon on the atmosphere?
Answer:	Halons are fire extinguishing agents which are used widely for
the protection of conputers and other electronic systems
that might be damaged by water. Halon is an inert gas which
extinguishes fire by oxidant reduction. Halon, or Polytetra-
fluorethylene (FTFE), was discovered in 1938 and commercial
production of products such as Halon and Teflon began in 1947.
The US Army Corps of Engineers introduced the term "halon" to
describe the family of halogenated hydrocarbons which includes
FTFE.
Extensive studies on the toxicological effects of halogenated
agents indicate little, if any, risk is attached to the use
of Halon when used according to National Fire Protection
Association Standards.
There is no specific evidence that Halon contributes to
atmospheric pollution, but there have been recent studies
which link the chlorofluorecarbon (CFC) family of compounds
(which includes Halon) to ozone depletion and global climate
change.
