0 PUBLIC INEORMATTCN REFERENCE UNIT (PIMJ)
The Public Information Reference Unit (PIRU) is one of EPA's eight
major dockets, providing public access to EPA regulatory information
published in the Federal Register.
The areas that PIRU covers are: the Clean Mr Act (primarily, the
State Implementation Plans); and the Clean Water Act (primarily, the
Effluent Limitation Guidelines). PIRU also has information supporting
other EPA statutes including the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act
(RCRA), the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Noise Control Act and the
Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act.
The other major Agency Dockets are:

WHAT'S OUT THERE
The titles listed here are not in the EPA Headquarters Library,
but should be available in bookstores or at your local public
library.
Gutek, Barbara A. Sex and the Workplace. San Francisco: Jossey-
Bass, 1985. 216p. $19.95.
Sex and the Workplace is a title that in the author's own
words, "connotes a sexy image that sounds like fun." In
contrast, this work is a serious and comprehensive treat-
ment of sexual harassment in the workplace.
The author's goal is to explore how and why sex becomes a
tangible problem for individuals and organizations, examine
how organizations unwillingly encourage problematic sexual
behavior, and recommend methods of managing potential
problems. The first two objectives are treated more
comprehensively than the third.
Kahne, Hilda. Reconceiving Part - Time Work: New Perspectives for
Older Workers and Women. Totowa, N.J. : Rowman & Allan, 1985.
159p. $35.00. Hard cover.
Restructuring Work to accommodate the individual - of whatever
age - seems to be a good idea from both the individual's and
the employer's standpoint. This book looks at the demographics
of existing social policy and union views; then moves on to
consider individual and institutional options for moving
toward a more varied set of approaches to getting the job
done. The author admits that there is need for seme further

research, but has indicated the potential payoffs as well as
where some available pitfalls lie.
Kogan, Marcos, ed. Ecological Theory and Integrated Pest Management
Practice. New York, N.Y. : Wiley, 1986. 362p. illus. $54.95.
On account of the gap between tenets of ecological theory
and designs of pest management systems, seme of North
America's most astute and provocative ecological theorists
and ecologically minded pest management proponents came
together for the symposuim of which this collection of 12
papers is the proceedings. The work gives an incisive
overview on how the approach to pest control has proceeded
from "brute force" tactics of pesticide overuse to IFM
tactics & makes a compelling case for an approach that
embraces much greater recognition of large - area,
ecosystem - level processes and gentler, less frequent
intervention.
Smith, Perry M. Taking Charge. Washington, D.C. : National Defense
University Press (available fran U.S. GPO), 1986. 234p. $7.00.
This is not the usual fare for students in management or
organization behavior courses. Rather it takes a very
practical approach to leadership in organizations. While
the author refers to the academic literature in his text,
he does not analyze it or dwell upon it but uses it to make
practical points about organizations. Although many of his
examples are drawn from his military experience, few of the
lessons relate to military organizations. The book is
relevant and useful to executives in any large organization.
Stoirmel, Henry. A View of the Sea. Princeton, N.J. : Princeton
University Press, 1987. 165p. illus. $19.95.
The author has interesting and often original views about
life in general and science in particular, sane of which
shine through in the anecdotes and "one - liners" that
enliven every chapter of what seems to be a highly
successful attempt to explain important aspects of the
ocean circulation to a wide audience.

Question: Do shopping malls generate hazardous wastes?
Answer: There is a dearth of research on the topic at present.
Existing literature suggests that shopping malls do not
necessarily generate hazardous wastes per se, but the
congestion and traffic jams in shopping centers contaminate
the air. Cars are deemed to be the single major producer
of pollutants in these environments, adversely affecting
public health.
Attempts at pedestrian zoning or creating traffic-free
zones for malls is a recourse that has been tried.
Pedestrians, long relegated to crowded sidewalks are
starting to venture out into streets wrested from
automobiles. Another solution is requiring cars to have
the latest in snog controls to achieve healthful air
quality.
