MCNAMARA'S HIGHLIGHTS
•	EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES BULLETIN
This new bulletin, published by the Program Systems Division, Office of Information Resources
Management, is designed to provide EPA managers with a better understanding of how emerging
technologies can assist the agency in fulfilling its mission.
Joe Sierra, the editor, welcomes contributions of articles on new technologies and their applications
within EPA programs. He would also like to expand the coverage to include articles from other
Federal agencies and private organizations.
Send your contributions to Joe Sierra, e-mail epa3783 or PM-211B. For a copy of the November
issue of the Emerging Technologies Bulletin, please contact Mary Hoffman, Headquarters Library
at 382-5922.
•	HAZARDOUS WASTE VIDEOCASSETTES
The following videos (VHS format) are available for overnight borrowing:
-	Introduction to Hazardous Waste.
It presents an overview of the hazardous waste management process. It discusses government
regulation, emphasizes the important role each individual plays on the hazardous waste
management team and stresses the importance of doing the job right.
-	Packaging Hazardous Waste.
Instructional guide for workers with the responsibilities of preparing hazardous waste for safe
storage, transportation and disposal. It covers packaging, labeling, and marking procedures
and discusses common problems.
Contact Monique Currie, 382-5922 for more information on these and other hazardous waste
videos.
•	NEW STAFF MEMBER
We would like to welcome Lisa Thompson, our new reference librarian. Lisa received her Masters
degree in Library Science from Catholic University. She previously worked for the National
Rehabilitation Information Center as a reference librarian. She served with the Peace Corps in
Ecuador, where she designed and developed a library and Training center for parents and teachers
of children with disabilities.

WHAT'S GOT THERE
The books listed here are not in the EPA Headquarters Library,
but should be available in bookstores or at your local public
library.
Carter, Ashton D., et al. eds. Managing Nuclear Operations.
Washington, D.C. : Brookings, 1987. 773p. $39.95, $18.95 paper.
The book delves into a national security problem of enormous
sensitivity and complexity: how the system for relaying infor-
mation to the president & transmitting presidential orders is
supposed to work - and how it may fail - in the event of a
nuclear crisis.
Dainoff, Marvin J. & Marilyn H. Dainoff. People and Productivity.
Ontario, Canada: Holt, Rinehart and Winston of Canada, 1986.
230p. $36.95.
The book discusses what ergonomics is & the overall benefits
that could be derived from ergonomic improvements. It is
informative, well-written, & user-friendly. The authors have
captured the problems that office managers face daily. The
intelligent application of these ergonomic principles will
benefit both the individual worker, in terms of reduced health
complaints and increased quality of working life, and the
enployer, in terms of increased productivity.
Hacker, Barton. The Dragon's Tail: Radiation Safety m the Manhattan
Project, 1942-1946. University of California, i987. 268p. $22.50
Over the past few years, glimpses of the dark side of America's
romance with the atom have made their nuclear arms race "unthink-
able" in a new way: the record now shows that in providing
for America's defense with nuclear weapons, the U.S. government
is having a profoundly destructive impact on the environment of
its citizens. The author competently presents a readable account
of a complicated scientific & social issue.
Miller, William C. The Creative Edge: Fastening Innovation Where
You Work. Reading, MA : Addison Wesley, 1987. 272p. $19.95.
This book helps companies to take full advantage of their
creative potential by showing that innovative thinking is
a powerful strategy for increasing organizational productivi-
ty on all levels. Included are techniques for brainstorming,
guidelines for conducting meetings, procedures for organizing
information, and steps for managing transitions.

Werwie, Doris M. Sex arid Pay in the Federal Government: Using Job
Evaluation Systems to Implement Comparable Worth. Westport, CT :
Greenwood Press, 1987. 181p. $35.00.
This study focuses on the job evaluation procedures used in the
federal government to evaluate job worth & examines whether the
evaluation system is more beneficial to female-dominated jobs
tlian the old system was. It discusses theories on gender-based
occupational segregation & the male/female wage gap, current
legal and legislative issues, and statistical data used to review
the evaluation system.

Question: What are the environmental concerns about disposable
diapers?
Answer:	According to the literature the environmental impacts of
disposable diapers include the following:
(a)	lack of Biodegradability of the diapers components
in septic tanks;
(b)	air pollution potential of incineration products
of disposable diapers;
(c)	the sheer amount of this fairly new contribution
to our country's trash disposal problem as 16
billion diapers are added to our yearly volume
of trash; and
(d)	the health risks which are being assessed as traces
of the highly toxic chemical dioxin have recently
been found in this product.
