Organic chemists dealing with complex molecular structures
nearly always avoid complicated IUPAC - approved names by
using either acronyms or nonsystematic coined names. This
book is the lighthearted record of recently invented trivial
names for organic structures, reactions, and techniques.

Worker Responses to Hazard Information. Cambridge, MA : Harvard
University Press, 1987. 197pp. $27.50.
The fundamental premise of this book is that information
policies affect economic behavior by altering consumers'
and workers' assessment of risk. Extensive surveys of
consumers and workers explore aspects of this
behavior in response to products' hazard warning
label.

as it took social upheavals of seismic proportions to jolt
it into the thick of twentieth - century politics.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Question:	What are the long-term effects of the nuclear
reactor accident at Chernobyl?
A*************************************************************
ACCIDENT:	Explosion and fire resulting release of
radioactivity
PLACE:	Chernobyl (80 mi. north of Kiev)
CASUALTIES: 31 dead from acute radiation exposure, 500
hospitalized, 135,000 evacuated within 18-
mile radius
COST:	Approximately $14 billion (according to the
Politburo)
***************************************************************
Answer:	Even though there remains considerable uncertainty
about the impact of the accident at Chernobyl,
several studies have predicted far-ranging
effects. initial estimates of potential cancer
deaths varied widely because of uncertainty about
radiation exposure of Soviet and European
citizens. In 1987 the International Atomic Energy
Agency predicted that the radiation released at
Chernobyl could cause over 10,000 cancer deaths in
the Soviet Union over the next 70 years. Health
officials around the world are expecting increases
in other health disorders such as Downs syndrome
and birth defects, thyroid diseases and metabolic
disorders. other experts expect up to 40,000
deaths due to long-term radioactive contamination
of the food supply.
The Chernobyl accident and aftermath prompted
increased research on reactor safety around the
world. In addition the event dealt a damaging
blow to the farming industry in the Soviet union,
Britain and Northern Europe. It encouraged
openness (glasnost) between soviet Officials and
Soviet Citizens, and the world community.
