June 1 - EPA MAKES AVAILABLE ITS COMMENTS ON ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
STATEMENTS FOR APRIL 16-30, 1976. The list, with explanatory
information, was published in the Federal Register on May 27, 1976.

June 3 - EPA RELEASES ECONOMIC STUDIES OF REFINING AND UTILITIES
INDUSTRIES. Administrator Russell Train said that air and water
pollution clean-up costs imposed on the petroleum refining and
electric utilities industries are reasonable in terms of the
limited effect they will have on product prices, capital availability
and employment. (Acly)
June 4 - EPA AWARDS $229.6 MILLION IN GRANTS DURING FEBRUARY.

June 7 - EPA TO MEET WITH MARYLAND MAYORS TO SPEED SEWAGE TREATMENT
PLANT CONSTRUCTION. John Quarles, Deputy Administrator, makes
announcement that EPA officials will meet with mayors and local
officials in seven Maryland communities in an attempt to break
a log jam of paper work that is slowing construction of sewage
treatment plants. (Reed)
June 7 - CALIFORNIA LANDFILL WILL PRODUCE GAS. Gas wel]s drilled in
a sanitary landfill will demonstrate that methane gas formed by
decomposing buried waste can be economically recovered, improved in
quality and piped to private homes and industries. (Sibbison)
June 9 - PUBLIC MEETINGS TO BE HELD BY EPA PESTICIDE ADVISORY
COMMITTEE. Citizens will have an opportunity to express their views
on how the EPA could improve its regulation of pesticides at a series
of public meetings beginning in August. (O'Neill)
June 9 - EPA ESTABLISHES GUIDELINES FOR SELLING PAPER FOR RECYCLING -
Guidelines are established that require Federal facilities across
the country to separate their high-grade office wastepaper,
corrugated containers, and newsprint for recycling where markets
exist. (Sibbison)
June 10 - EPA FINDS NO SIGNIFICANT RADIATION EXPOSURE FROM INCIDENT
AT BEATTY, NEVADA RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL SITE. EPA report says
there was no significant exposure to persons from the various radio-
active materials that were removed from a low-level radioactive
waste disposal site near Beatty, Nevada. (Casey)
June 10 - EPA ISSUES PROPOSED TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON SLUDGE MANAGEMENT.
Bulletin is designed to aid EPA Regional Administrators in evaluating
grant applications for construction of publicly-owned sewage treat-
ment facilities. (Niles)
June 10 - EPA AWARDS $293 MILLION IN GRANTS DURING MARCH. - (Niles)
June 11 - EPA REPORTS DDT USE IN HEALTH EMERGENCIES - EPA issues
a registration to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta,
Georgia for use of DDT for control of rabid bats. (O'Neill)
June 11 - EPA ANNOUNCES PROGRAM TO LIMIT TOXIC WATER POLLUTION. -
A new program to control pollution of waterways from toxic and
cancer-causing chemicals calls for development and implementation
by 1983 of strict controls over discharges of 65 dangerous chemicals.

June 14 - EPA AWARDS $176.4 MILLION DURING APRIL. - (Niles)
June 14 - G. WILLIAM FRICK NAMED EPA'S GENERAL COUNSEL. - Administrator
Train appoints Mr. Frick as General Counsel for the EPA. (Casey)

June 14 - TWO NEW APPOINTEES IN EPA'S PESTICIDE CONTROL AREA. -
Richard J. Denney, Jr. is appointed Associate General Counsel
for the Pesticide Division and James M. Conlon assumes new post
as Associate to Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pesticide
Programs. (O'Neill)
June 15 - EPA ANNOUNCES DATA REQUIREMENT POLICY FOR NEW PESTICIDE
PRODUCT REGISTRATIONS. - EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs says
they will allow new applications for some pesticide products to
receive "conditional registrations" while waiting for testing to
be completed for full registration. (O'Neill)
June 16 - EPA REVIEWS TWO PCB SUBSTITUTES - Polydimethylsiloxane
and Chloralkylene have been reviewed by EPA as possible substitutes
for PCBs. (Sibbison)
FOR USE UPON RECEIPT - EPA ANNOUNCES SECOND CONFERENCE ON DESIGN
CONSIDERATIONS TO IMPROVE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF WASTE-
WATER TREATMENT PLANTS. A series of conferences in various cities
this year will focus on the importance of engineering design as a
basis for acheiving more efficient operational control and
maintenance of sewage treatment plants. (Niles)
June 17 - EPA PROPOSES WATER POLLUTION STANDARDS FOR FOUR
TOXIC PESTICIDES. EPA proposes strict new rules to regulate the
discharge of wastes into waterways from industries making or using
the pesticides aldrin/dieldrin, DDT (and related compounds), endrin
and toxaphene. (Acly)
June 22 - DISPOSAL OF AEROSOL CANS CONTAINING VINYL CHLORIDE GAS. -
EPA advises manufacturers to give top priority to special incineration
methods when disposing of the cans. (Sibbison)
June 22 - EPA APPROVES DDT USE TO FIGHT PLAGUE IN COLORADO. -
The State of Colorado will use the DDT dust to fight rodent fleas
which are carrying plague germs and threatening human health.
June 28 - EPA INITIATES ACTIONS AGAINST THREE PESTICIDES:
CHLOROBENZILATE, OMPA AND STROBANE. - EPA notified makers of
the pesticides that they have 45 days in which to show why further
production and sale of these products whould not be stopped as a
possible human health threat. (O'Neill)
June 28 - ALLIED REQUESTS CANCELLATION OF KEPONE PRODUCTS. -
Allied Chemical requests EPA to cancel the registration of all
pesticide products containing kepone. (O'Neill)
June 29 - EPA, UTILITIES TO TEST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR CONTROLLING
AIR POLLUTION FROM COAL COMBUSTION. EPA and two electric utility
companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly under-
take a three-year project demonstrating the effectiveness of physical
coal cleaning as a cost-effective method for meeting Federal and
State air pollution laws. (Ryan)
June 30 - EPA, HEW ANNOUNCE $200,000 PROGRAM TO TRAIN MECHANICS IN
AUTO POLLUTION CONTROL. (Ryan)
