Orientation
Learn how to quickly gain access to
sources of in-depth information on the
science, management and technology of
marine and freshwater environments: attend
the CD-ROM orientation on Tuesday,
January 12,1993 from 2-3 p.m. in the
Headquarters Library. ASFA's bibliographic
citations are pulled from worldwide sources
covering aquatic communities, biological and
ecological aspects of marine, freshwater and
brackish environments and limnology, in the
form of journal articles, book chapters and

Environmental
Equity
There is a new
addition to the
Innovative
Management
Strategies bibliography series: Environmental
Equity. This publication summarizes journal
articles, law reviews, books and reports, and
newspaper articles addressing inequities in
the distribution of environmental hazards.
Environmental Equity includes an
introductory section of general overview
articles, and some of the classic studies of the
correlation between race, income, and
environmental risk. Summaries of books and
articles relating to a specific group are divided
as follows: African American Issues, Native
American Issues, Border and Hispanic Issues,
and Asian and Pacific Islander Issues. The
final section, Federal Response to
Environmental Equity, lists items representing
EPA action on environmental equity.
To receive your copy of this
bibliography, stop by the EPA Headquarters
Library or call the Reference Desk at
260-5921. ~
Audiovisual
Residuals
Everywhere one turns, one
is confronted with the
importance of teams. From
the Clinton transition team to the team-
teachers at your neighborhood school,
managers realize that no substantive work
can get done without team efforts.
The EPA Headquarters Library has
many resources to help you improve your
team productivity. For example, the following
video tapes in our Audio/Visual collection
focus on team-building and group-thinking.
Brain Power, a production of the Learning
Corporation of America, with a running time of
12 minutes, serves to provide a general
framework for redefining the way you
approach group thinking. John Houseman (of
The Paper Chase lame) outlines Dr. Karl
Albrecht's three key principles of perception:
recognition, interpretation and expectation.
In Team Building: How to Motivate and
Manage People, Mark Sanborn presents a
primer on building effective teams, from
recruitment to team training, goal setting to
dealing with problem team members. This
program is a production of CareerTrack and
is broken into four parts on two tapes.
Imagineering is based on the book of the
same title by Micheal LeBoeuf. Use this
program to help spark creativity in groups:
brainstorming, co-operation, problem solving,
team productivity. The program is hosted by
former astronaut Alan Shepard, and is 16
minutes long.
The Abilene Paradox features Jerry B.
Harvey of George Washington University, and
is 28 minutes long. Harvey helps diagnose
counter-productive group decisions caused by
mismanaged agreement, and gives strategies
for coping with this common team ailment. ~

Journal Kernels
As autumn turns to winter in our
nation's capital, we naturally think of
trying to keep warm while facing the
next Alberta Clipper roaring towards
us from the Canadian hinterlands.
Though we take it for granted, the
energy used to supply this heat
becomes a very important part of our
daily lives. Where does it come from? How
can it be most efficiently used? These are
questions that can be answered by browsing
through the energy journals at the EPA
Headquarters Library which include the
following:
Oil and Gas Journal. Still an important
source of our winter fuel, oil and gas
production, processing, transportation and
exploration are examined in this journal. The
role of coal in meeting our nation's energy
needs is also addressed here, (weekly;
Holdings: 1965—1987 on microfilm; 1987—
present hardcopy)
Public Power. Published by the American
Public Power Association, this periodical takes
a close look at legislative and regulatory
monitoring of the energy industry. Educational
and informational services for local publicly
owned electric utilities are also examined, (bi-
monthly; Holdings: 1973—present hardcopy)
Solid Waste & Power. In addition to
examining the problems of disposal and
recycling in the solid waste industry, this
journal also examines news from the power
industry and one of its newest rages, the
conversion of trash to electricity, (bi-monthly;
Holdings: 1973—1975 and 1990—present
hardcopy)
If you have any questions on these or
other journals in the Headquarters Library,
please call us at 202-260-5922 or stop by the
Library and page through them yourself. ~
