United States Environmental Protection Agency Information Resources Management (PM-211 A) July 1992 &EPA The Catalyst Information for Environmental Action An Information Service for EPA HQ Staff from the Headquarters Library Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Environment—Well, Almost The 1992 Information Please Environmental Almanac is now available in the Library's reference collection. (REF GF 1.A15 1992) This compendium of information on numerous environmental issues was compiled by World Resources Institute. Half of the book is arranged by chapters on specific topics, from water to wastes to energy or tropical forests. Each chapter is chock-full of informative narrative, statistics, charts and tables. What are the best cities in the U.S. for bicycling? (p. 167) What are the top pesticides used on selected crops? (pp. 44-45.) See page 116 for a provocative look at the age-old question "paper or plastic?" State profiles provide contacts for the chief environmental officer and figures on energy use, pollutant releases and the amount of solid waste produced. For example, the state of Maryland uses 6,710 gallons of water per day. The second half of the book is devoted to country comparisons, a short look at how countries differ in average income, resource use and population density. Countries are ranked by water usage per capita, commercial energy use and gross national product. The Almanac is well-indexed and logically arranged to facilitate locating whatever information you need. ~ VV JJ CD-ROM Training Sessions The Headquarters Library is offering a series of CD-ROM Training sessions over the next year. Each session will last 1 hour and will focus on one CD-ROM product in the Library's collection. Access instructions, searching procedures, subject scope of the CD product and printing/saving to disk procedures will be covered at each monthly session. For more information on the Library's CD-ROM collection, pick up the brochure, Searching for Answers: Access to the Headquarters Library CD-ROM Collection at the Library. NTIS, the National Technical Information Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is the central source for the public sale and dissemination of U.S. Government-sponsored research. This file consists of citations to unclassified government-sponsored research, development, and engineering reports, as well as other analyses prepared by government agencies, their contractors, or grantees, including EPA Reports and journal articles. NTIS covers broad areas of interest such as environmental pollution and control, technology transfer, urban and regional development and more. NTIS on CD-ROM is searchable using a menu driven mode or search commands. Most citations include an abstract. Search results can be printed or downloaded to a floppy (BYOF-Bring Your Own Floppy). Class size is limited, so call today to reserve your space. This training session is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., August 14, 1992, in the Headquarters Library. ~ Audiovisual Residuals The Management Excellence Mission Don't forget to watch a Tom Peters video today! Don't forget to pick up a copy of our new video catalog today! Now that we have your attention, we'l just note that our collection of management video tapes includes several featuring that ever-alert proponent of excellence, Tom Peters. llYiith Excellence in the Public Sector (53 minutes) features five case studies of public and not-for-profit organizations. Peters describes how the Alameda Naval Air Depot, the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice, the City of Phoenix, Arizona, the National Theater Workshop of the Handicapped, and the Ochoco Forest Service in Oregon all use similar principles of management leading to high levels of productivity and quality. In Search of Excellence (88 minutes) is the video version of the famous book. Peters focuses on three major themes: innovation, productivity through people, and shared values. Although he examines private-sector companies, the lessons to be learned are applicable across the economy. The Leadership Alliance (64 minutes) allows Peters to talk with four leaders in the educational and industrial community, about the methods they use to create "excellent" organizations. Come on down and watch 'em here, or take 'em out. We've got equipment, or you can take our tapes for the evening (or the weekend). Just don't forget to take a free catalog on your way out. ~ Journal Kernels J J J' "Green Acres is the place to be..." Whoops! If you catch yourself singing along to this popular TV theme song, then maybe you are in the mood to peruse some of the agricultural journals in the EPA Headquarters Library. Agriculture Ecosystems & Environment. Topics covered in this journal include comparisons of different methods of agricultural production in terms of their ecology and how this production affects the pollution of soil, water and air. (20 issues a year) (Holdings: Vol. 3, No. 1, December 1976 [as Agriculture and Environment] to present) THE CATALYST JULY 1992 PAGE 2 ------- Journal of Applied Ecology. This journal deals with ecological principles underlying the management, control and development of biological resources for agriculture, forestry and aquaculture. Related disciplines include soil science, fishery science, range management, land reclamation and animal husbandry, (funny, but I don't ever recall seeing photos of any animals in the "Weddings and Engagements" section of the newspaper.) (quarterly) (Holdings: Vol. 10, No. 1, April 1973 to present) Journal of Sustainable Agriculture. This journal examines ongoing and future agricultural systems and their relationships to the resource base and the environment. Its purpose is to promote the study of sustainable agriculture in the search for solutions to the problems of resource depletion and environmental damage, (quarterly) (Holdings: Vol. 1,No. 1, 1990 to present) If you have any questions about these or any other journals in our collection, please give us a call at 202-260-5922 or stop on by and visit us a spell. ~ The Learning Organization The Learning Organization, the latest bibliography in the Innovative Management Strategies series, is due out this month. A learning organization is one that experiments with new ways of looking at the world, focusing on creativity and growth. This bibliography will provide an introduction to learning in organizations, particularly in the public sector. Included are summaries of articles describing the role of managers in building learning organizations, and the need for learning at all employee levels. The Learning Organization also addresses learning as either creating or coping with change, and transforming organization. Pick up your copy at the Headquarters Library...you just may learn something! ~ EPA Headquarters Legislative Library Congress is running out of time to get legislation passed in the 102nd Congress, and it appears that there won't be much environmental legislation that will make it through the process.
