REPORT ON SAMPLING
The Arctic Environmental Research Laboratory released a report today en-
titled ''Design Considerations for Sampling Programs in Remote Areas."
"This report describes innovations and techniques that hava been developed
in recent years to support water quality field studies in cold climates," said
Richard W. Latimer, Director of the Arctic Environmental Research Laboratory.
The information in the report will be of particular interest to individuals
and organizations that conduct field studies in the Arctic and Subarctic.
Water quality field studies in cold climates rapidly reveal flaws in logis-
tic schemes and equipment reliabil ity. The report draws on the experience of
several researchers who discuss equipment, transportation, human performance,
and sampling programs. Deficiencies in current practice are also discussed with
recommendations for future development.
"The report is by no means a complete discussion of innovations in arctic
field work," Latimer saici. "However, it is a start toward compiling and communi-
cating techniques which have been used successfully." Readers are encouraged to
direct comments on the subject to the authors so that the information can be
continually upgraded.
