FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FRIDAY; JANUARY 25, 1974
EPA PROPOSES EMISSION REGULATIONS FOR LIGHT DUTY DIESEL TRUCKS
The Environmental Protection Agency today proposed that
light duty diesel trucks be required to meet the same exhaust
emission standards as light duty gasoline fueled trucks.
Although at present there are none for sale in this
country, EPA has been notified that at least one manufacturer
is considering marketing a light duty diesel truck here in
the future.
The standards which EPA is proposing for such a vehicle "
are: 2.0 grams per mile (gpm) hydrocarbons, 20 gpm carbon
monisice, 3.1 nitrogen oxides. These exhaust emission limits
would go into effect with the 1976 model year. For light
duty gasoline fueled trucks, these same standards plus an
evaporative hydrocarbons control will become effective begin-
ning with the 1975 model year.
A light duty truck, diesel or gasoline, is defined as a
vehicle weighing 6,000 pounds or less and designed primarily
for transporting property. It can also be a truck type derivative,
such as a multi-purpose or recreational vehicle, with special
features enabling off-street use.

EPA anticipates that light duty diesel trucks now being
manufactured overseas could meet the standards with the appli-
cation_jDf-existing technology.
The Agency is also proposing today that the diesel trucks
be tested for emission compliance following the same procedure
as that used for light duty diesel cars.
