SIXTEEN ADDITIONAL AUTO MANUFACTURERS GRANTED A 19 76 NITROGEN
OXIDES SUSPENSION BY EPA	!	:
American Motors and 15 foreign automobile manufacturers
including Volkswagen and Volvo today were- granted a one year
suspension of the 19 76 nitrogen oxide (NOx) auto emission
standard by the Environmental Protection Agency.
These manufacturers will now be required to meet an
interim standard for the 19 76 model year of 2.0 grams per
mile (gpm). The suspended statutory standard is .4 gpm.
The interim standard is the same as that set by EPA in
granting similar suspension requests of Ford, General Motors,
and Chrysler on July 30, 19 73.
After notice of receipt of the applications and opportunity
for public hearing, today's suspensions were granted upon the
basis that the 16 manufacturers made "all good faith efforts"
to achieve the statutory standard.
The other questions that must be considered by EPA in sus-
pending an auto emission standard -r the public interest, avail-
