WILLIAM J. DIRCKS NAMED EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO EPA ADMINISTRATOR
William J. Dircks has been appointed Executive Assistant to
the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Administrator
Russell E. Train announced today. He replaces Roger Strelow who
has been named Acting Assistant Administrator for EPA Air and
Water Programs.
Mr. Dircks is now a Senior Staff Member at the Council on
Environmental Quality where he has served since 1971.
At the Council, Mr. Dircks has been responsible for energy
regulatory matters. He also participated in the development of
environmental legislation and the preparation" of the Council's
annual report on environmental quality.
Born in New York City September 20, 1929, Mr. Dircks is
marpied to the former Rosemarie Van Eycken Barrett of Pelham,
New York. They have three children and live in Sumner, Maryland.
He received a B.A. degree from Fordham University, an M.A.
degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and did
predoctoral work in economics at the University of California,
Berkeley.
Mr. Dircks served eight years as an Air Force Officer
specializing in the intelligence field and in German and Soviet

instructor in economics at the University of California. His
Federal service includes work with the Atomic Energy Commission,
the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity and the Economic Development
Administration of the Department of Commerce.
