EPA AWARDS $1.9 MILLION FOR NOISE STUDIES
The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded contracts
for studies designed to help establish noise control regula-
tions for motorcycles, buses, bulldozers, earth loaders, trash
compactors mounted on solid waste collection vehicles, and
refrigerator units mounted on trucks and commercial interstate
trailers. All have previously been designated as major sources
of noise.
Additional contracts were also awarded to determine what
technology is available for quieting newly manufactured auto-
mobiles, snowmobiles, and jackhammers and paving breakers, and
the costs of applying that technology. The total for the con-
tracts was about $1.9 million.
The Noise Control Act of 1972 requires that EPA establish
noise emission standards to protect public health and welfare.
"The contractors represent some of the best acoustical
expertise in the country," Dr. Alvin F. Meyer, Jr., Deputy
Assistant Administrator for Noise Control Programs. "They
will assist the Agency in researching the impact on public
health of noise levels from the various vehicles and equip-

and the economic impact of the necessary regulations. The
contractors represented will provide EPA with a range of
experience and information from the engineering, economics,!
and bio-acoustics disciplines to complement that of the
Agency's, own professional staff.
"In a number of cases, we have assigned different phases
of the same noise problem to different contractors. For
example, one contractor will be studying the problem of
available noise control technology for automobiles, and.
another will be studying the cost of applying that technology."
