All have previously been designated as major sources of noise. Additional contracts were also awarded to determine what technology is available for quieting newly manufactured auto- mobiles, snowmobiles, and jackhammers and paving breakers, and the costs of applying that technology. The total for the con- tracts was about $1.9 million. The Noise Control Act of 1972 requires that EPA establish noise emission standards to protect public health and welfare. "The contractors represent some of the best acoustical expertise in the country," Dr. Alvin F. Meyer, Jr., Deputy Assistant Administrator for Noise Control Programs.
